Clare Valley

From the highly specialized Stanway family property at Watervale in Valley Clare. Stanway has produced the most eminent medal winning vintages ever since the first crop. Luxurious mineral, talc and bright citrus characters feature prominently. As is expected of the Watervale style, the finish is clean and refined with great length of flavour. Enjoy with guinea fowl, whiting or coquilles St Jacques.

Sourced off some splendid old vines, grown to one of Watervale's finest sites, the Stanway family's Slate Creek Vineyard Cuasin na Sleina, planted in the 1970s along a northeast southwest orientation to deep, red clay loam over limestone soils with pockets of slate at 350 metres above sea level. Grapes are harvested throughout the cool of night, each block being picked and processed separately, delivered promptly to the winery and crushed, destemmed and chilled prior to a gentle pressing. The free run juices are cool fermented followed by racking and stabilisation prior to a light filtration and bottling. The wine is handled as expeditiously as possible to retain Riesling's essential character and elegance.

Pale straw with supple green hues. A gentle swirl reveals aromas of lime, lemon and blossom on the nose. The palate will reward those with a penchant for an elegant and refined Riesling, lime juice and lemon zest are complemented by mineral and slate characters. At the riper end of the spectrum, a generosity of flavour and immediate drinkability.

A wonderful example of intense, pure Clare Valley Riesling from the estate's Ackland Vineyard at Watervale. Good growers on elevated slate sites from a little further north in the Clare Valley also contribute fruit. All the grapes are hand picked and gently crushed, only the best free run juices are retained. Knappstein is made with minimal intervention to preserve purity of fruit expression. Juices are cold settled prior to a long fermentation with neutral yeast at low temperatures, all the way to dryness, lasting between fourteen and eighteen days to preserve the delicate flavours and aromas. Upon completion the wine is racked off yeast followed by a light filtration prior to taste trials and assemblage.

Straw lime colour. Lifted citrus aromas with distinct notes of slate and spice. The palate displays classic Watervale characters of lemon and lime with a fine mineral structure. Showing wonderful depth of flavour, a distinct delicacy and liveliness. The natural acid level provides the wine's backbone and palate line and is perfectly balanced even in the wine's youth.

Slate and shaley rocks which lie abundant around the Ackland vineyard play a crucial role in the aromatic development of the Riesling. Planted to cool altitudes of 420-450 metres overlooking nearby Watervale township, Ackland's east northeast facing aspect protects the vines from the prevailing winds off the Great Southern Ocean. Whilst capturing the full morning sun to develop strong lime and citrus flavours, the high natural acids are greatly enhanced by the cold night temperatures. All the fruit is selectively hand picked, gently crushed with only the best free run juice used. Musts are cold settled and fermented with neutral yeasts at cool temperatures to dryness, cold settled once again for clarification prior to filtration.

Light yellow colour. Ackland shows lifted lemons and limes with delicate floral aromas. The palate is rich with lemon lime and has wonderful persistent acid to complement the fruit sweetness. Knappstein displays the Watervale generosity of intense citrus fruits, exciting and immensely pleasureable, the persistence is balanced by a refreshing mineral acidity. It finishes long and lingering.

The terroir and microclimes of Marlborough yield a tremendous quality of Sauvignon Blanc, fruit which ripens to perfection, translating into wines of intense regional character. Konrad Hengstler delights in formulating a slightly more herbaceous nose than most efforts from Marlborough, in total harmony against a backdrop of unctuous lemongrass and lime characters, persimmons and citrus/ lychee fruits. Bright and zingy, a lively mouthful of pineapples and passionfruit before a lingering, mineral finish. Clean fresh and bright, with a quenching underlying citrus character, finely balanced acid and ripe fruit structure.

Bright straw lime colour. A delicate, aromatic nose showing grapefruit and lime, hints of fresh ginger, soft layers of cream and quartz silica minerality. The palate is pure and fine with some flintiness. A Clonale that is pert and linear in youth but with the lees creaminess in place to build texture and weight as it evolves.
