Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Spatlese
Saar
Scharzhofberger was likely planted by the Romans. One of the most historically significant vineyards in all Europe, it belonged to the monastery St Marien ad Martyres during the middle ages. It was seized by the French government after the revolution and part of it was passed to the Muller family in 1797. Egon Muller IV makes Spätlese from grapes of superior ripeness.

Scharzhofberger is one of the finest vineyards in Germany and indeed all Europe. So great is its fame, it remains one of only a handful of German vineyards, whose wines are sold without mention of the village name. Soils are composed of grey and red slates, very loose and well drained, they form a unique synergy with the microclimate to provide singular conditions for Riesling. Riesling grapes exhibiting the requisite qualities of a Spätlese are fermented mostly through the action of wild yeasts in old, thousand litres oak foudres. The wines are raised in ancient cellars which were built by mediaeval monks. The deep, very cold and damp environments make the perfect environment in which to gently age the wines.

Light golden hue. Subtle florals to the bouquet, peach nectar and citrus oils, honey and herb. A judiciously ripe palate exhibiting delicate fruit characters with hints of honeyed botrytis and citrus florals which are supported by a vivid crystalline structure and chillingly fresh acidity. A beguiling finish on lingering notes of juicy fruit/ floral/ nut flavours.
Egon Muller Wiltinger Braune Kupp Auslese
Mosel
Weingut Egon Muller has been family owned and operated since 1797. All Egon Muller's editions are Riesling and the family's experience with the varietal dates back to the discovery of Auslese itself. The style is made without any compromise from the finest parcels, as harvests of suitably high quality become available. Grapes are hand picked off the ripest bunches, very late in the season until early December.

Weingut Egon Muller makes Riesling and nothing but. Through the influences of nature and nurture, Riesling is a singular variety which has been bred over millennia to lend itself to an almost innumerable permutations of fruit character and fragrance. Egon Muller focuses on collating the most prized parcels from his own vineyards and from the most distinguished growers in the Rhineland. Many of these sites were established by ancient Romans and are grown to rootstock which can be traced back centuries. The most prized clones, planted to the finest blocks which have enjoyed perfect growing conditions, are set aside each year to provide the quality of fruit which can be vinified into the rich and luscious Auslese.

Pale gold hue. White fruit aromas and floral bouquet, citrus, peaches and pear. A rich palate with bright citrus acid balancing the sweetness of fruit flavours. The wine displays stony minerality, hints of acacia and lilac, grilled exotic fruit, sweet stone fruits and bracing acidity all combined in perfect harmony. The finish is very long, with generous, lingering complexity.

Weingut Egon Muller is arguably the final word in great Riesling wines. One of the most fortuitous winegrowing sites in the Rhineland, it contains two blocks of old vines, Kupp and Braune Kupp, which yield the finest fruit. The Eden Valley is cool and wet, soils tend to be skeletal and minerally, a major determinant to growing Riesling. Care is taken in every step of the vine cycle, hand pruning, careful selection of picking time and many hours of nurturing throughout the year all contribute to the wonderful results found in the bottle. Grapes are predominantly sourced from the Storton Vineyard, located just outside the township of Eden Valley. Quick separation of the juice from the skins gives the purest juice possible. A long cool ferment and prompt separation from the yeast lees has given a truly vibrant Riesling of classical style. Bottled very early to capture all the fresh citrus/lime characters and to hold the crisp finish.

Pale straw hues. A bouquet of citrus, passionfruit and lavender. A profuse palate of limes and mineral on a precise acid line. Tight, dry and zingy, spectrums of bright citrus florals with green pear and quartz. A wonderful aperitif, the wine of choice alongside tempura battered flathead fillets.
