Tylers Stream Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
Marlborough
Available by the dozen
A generously flavoured Marlborough wine which has claimed highly coveted accolades at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards. Tylers Stream is a boutique operation which continues to grow from strength to strength. Completely unoaked, in easy drinking styling, it sings of kiwifruit and lychee. Many of the contributing vines surround the winery itself, whence the Tyler Stream flows closely by. Kiwifruit, lemongrass and passion throughout, firm but balanced acid backbone, a generous wine of concentration and poise.

Tylers Stream is vinified from grapes grown to the Wairau Valley, off vines planted to relatively young riverbed soils that generally are stony, well drained and quite silty. The long cool growing seasons of these highly favourable microclimes, as characterised by warm sunny days and cool nights, achieve fruit with good natural acidity and clean, fresh flavours. Soil profiles, vineyard practices and levels of fruit maturity at harvest all contribute complexity to the finished wine. Tylers Stream is crafted by Andrew Hedley from parcels of choice Sauvignon Blanc, fashioned into a clean and forward drinking, unwooded fruit driven styling without any exposure to oak.

Like it's namesake, Tyler's Stream gleams in the glass, a crystal clear pale straw. A deliciously vibrant, fruit packed entry with fresh, lifted, fully ripe aromas. Intensely pungent with asparagus, petulant characters of freshly cut grass and smacks of green vegetable. Lively palate of pineapple and gooseberry, ample citrus, tangy with lime before a clean, lingering finish.

Since 1982, Belford has claimed an extraordinary list of significant wine show trophies and copious gold medals.

From fruit grown to the Belford property, owned and operated by the Elliotts, just fifteen kilometres northwest of the Tyrrell wineworks. Edward Tyrrell planted his first vines in 1858 after receiving a grant over poor pasture land in the lee of Brokenback Range. Tyrrell can lay claim to being one of the only companies in the world to have inaugurated a distinctive genre of wine, Hunter Valley Semillon. At just over four hectares and completely dry grown, Belford was established 1933 to very fine sandy loams, almost talcum powder in consistency. Grapes are all hand picked, lightly crushed and coolly fermented, after a term on gross lees, Belford is racked and treated to an unoaked maturation before bottling. Alcohol 11.0%

Straw coloured. A classic Hunter Semillon showing a tightly structured palate with considerable length and breadth of citrus honey flavours. Belford develops honey characters but maintains its natural fresh acid. The last of the Semillon picked, characterized by the fuller palate of Belford vineyard, a Semillon of great fruit intensity and a high, clean acid finish.

Tyrrells HVD Semillon
Hunter Valley
Available in cartons of six
Hunter Valley Distillery is a continuation of the same dry creek bed as the Short Flat Vineyard that produces Vat 1 Semillon. HVD is a proven Semillon vineyard, which consistently yields parcels of fruit that reach the very high standards that are demanded for inclusion in the exalted Vat 1. In 1995, the winemakers decided to keep the HVD Semillon by itself as a separate reserve wine and it went on to become one of the most talked about releases of the last decade. HVD Semillon is rapidly gaining a solid repute as one of Australia's great white wines.

Vines planted in 1908 form the Sign Post Block, completely dry grown and all on original root stock. The property lies between two small creeks that are fed from a spring in the Brokenback range. Soils are light sandy loam going down into coarse river sand. The vines are rarely stressed and their roots are almost continuously in water. Fruit is crushed but not de-stemmed and placed through a Miller airbag press. Juices are centrifuged after pressing and fermented following inoculation by an old strain of Tyrrell's yeast over the course of a fortnight. HVD is winemaking in its purest form, parcels are treated to a short time on gross lees prior to racking, assembling and preparation for bottling. Alcohol 11.0%

Bright straw colour. Floral fruit in youth, an immediate impact of big, soft baked notes on the nose and palate which moves towards deeper biscuit characters with age. The palate is mellow with softer acids than most other Tyrrell Hunter Valley Semillon. A fine match to gourmandise white meats and poultry, truffle recipes or fine cheese.

At Tyrrell's Hunter Valley, the beginnings of five generations winemaking can be traced to an unassuming one roomed hut. The homestead of ironbark slabs was founder Edward Tyrrell's home. Built by hand in 1858 and progressively surrounded by grape vines, the site marks the birthplace of one of Australia's great winemaking dynasties. Glenoak is a predominantly hillside vineyard that features rich and unusually coloured purple ochre clay loams yielding a scant tonnage per acre. After a relatively cool fermentation, Steven spends minimal time on yeast lees, promptly bottled to maintain its freshness. Vinified completely unwooded, without any barrrel ferments or oak maturation whatsoever.

Light straw hue. Complex mineral and flint aromas with a palate dominated by the length of fruit and richness of flavour. As always with semi mature Hunter semillon, there is a wonderful balance between the fresh citrus flavours of youth and the aged toasty characters that are beginning to surface. An immensely approachable, seamlessly structured wine.
