Pikes Merle Reserve Riesling
Clare
Available in cases of 6
A pure expression of Riesling and an embodiement of the uniqueness at Polish Hill River, Merle is crafted by a Riesling specialist after collation of the finest fruit from each vintage. Named for the estate's matriarch Merle Pike, she knew that she was going to have her own label and was quietly chuffed about it. An intense and pure Riesling wine with refined citrus characters over a slatey mineral palate, successive vintages of Merle have been selected for service in Qantas First Class.

Merle expresses the slatey soils of the distinguished Pike vineyard. The Polish Hill subregion is considerably cooler than the rest of Clare Valley, imparting distinctive flavours and aromas into the ultimate wine. Vines are kept fresh with minimum levels of irrigation, just sufficient to keep the leaves intact and functioning, but not actually growing. This encourages all the vine's energy into ripening the fruit, optimizing flavour and aroma development in the process. Treated to the most exacting fruit selection and the highest standard of vinification, only the exclusively free run juices are included, Merle is inoculated to a mix of choice yeasts and coolly fermented without any malolactic.

Brilliant pale green colour. Pure, delicate citrus notes of lemon/ lime/ grapefruit with a twirl of regional slatey mineral character. Delicate, subtle and dry with vibrant lemon/ lime flavours tightly woven around a core of slate/ mineral acid that provides length and texture. A complex yet completely integrated, fully engaging wine.
Pikes Traditionale Clare Valley Riesling
Clare Valley
Available by the dozen
Henry Pike settled in the Adelaide Hills circa 1886, founding a brewery which made the finest beer and tonic ales in the colony. Every bottle was labelled with the English pike, a tradition which endures into the 21st century. Henry's great grandson, Edgar Walter Pike, was an established Clare Valley grower and vineyard manager who worked for a large proprietary wine company. His sons followed father's footsteps, today Andrew is one of the leading viticulturalists in Valley Clare and Neil is one of the region's most eminent winemakers.

Pikes extraordinary Riesling vines are planted to soils in the Polish Hill River area of the Clare Valley, generally regarded as one of the safest viticultural districts in Australia, in terms of pest and vine disease. The climate is considerably cooler and the soils are also quite unique to the rest of the region. The grapes positively flourish here in the red brown earth, clay and stoney soils. Fruit is harvested and pressed, inoculated by a pure yeast culture, then treated to vinification in controlled fermenters at a closely managed 12C to 15C for nigh on a month, retaining the lavish qualities of the inimitable Polish Hill. Pike Riesling is widely recognized for drinking beautifully from day one. Alcohol 11.5%

Brilliant pale green colour. Spotlessly clean and quite expressive bouquet, displaying citrus florals, apple and subtle notes of stone fruits and slate. Crisp, fresh and dry, loaded with waxy lemon and grapefruit flavours wrapped around a core of well balanced mineral acidity, adding length and focus to the finish.

Pinot Gris ripens quickly in all but the coolest of climates, it's ideally suited to the temperate Tasmanian season. Crop levels are kept low by selective bunch thinning to maximize intensity of flavour. Grapes are hand harvested throughout the chill of early morning. Fruit is crushed and immediately processed, the philosophy being to capture and retain the delectable characters of Pinot Gris while still on the vine. Parcels are pressed and treated to a short period of skin contact, extracting additional flavours which are locked away in the skins, this creates a more complex, rich and savoury style of Pinot Gris. Juices are slowly vinified at lower temperatures in a mix of barrel and fermenters, followed by early bottling.

Copper straw hue. Complex bouquet with a lovely depth of aroma, blooming with fragrant pear, jonagold apple, tangelo zest and goji berries. Jasmine and potpourri, subtle nutmeg notes. The palate is generous, full bodied and dry, poached pear flavours, strudels and paw paw, ginger and cinnamon spice, finishing with a fine chalky, mineral dryness.
Pipers Brook Vineyard Riesling
Pipers Brook, Tamar Valley
Available by the dozen
A fully engaging Riesling with alluring perfumes and elegant structure, from sites in the Pipers Brook and Tamar Valley of northeast Tasmania, an inspiring interpretation of the steely, complex wines of Alsace. The vineyards are vertically integrated through a rigorous regimen of site selection, viticultural development and management. This style of Riesling bridges the gap between the traditional Aussie which proffers citrus, chalkiness and calico, as opposed to their French counterparts which exude floral scents and offer refined, fruity palate structures.

The Pipers Brook vineyards are characterized by idyllic growing conditions. Grapes are encouraged to retain all the delicate but ripe, crisp varietal fruit flavours. Tasmania's cool climate when combined with close planting over gravely soil can yield a fine and delicate Riesling wine. Crop levels are maintained at low levels by bunch thinning to increase the intensity of flavours. Bunches are hand harvested throughout the early morning hours and cooled before an immediate processing to capture and retain the vivacious expression of the vineyard. Following the press, musts remain on skins to extract optimal flavours. A long cool ferment encourages retention of fresh fruit flavours while enhancing the bouquet.

Colour is a pale lemon. Lifted, perfumed nose with floral notes and traces of Asian tropical fruits. The palate is elegant and refined yet powerfully concentrated with traces of tangy citrus and tropical flavours, the overall balance is crisp and dry with a light skin tannin structure and soft mineral tones lifting the finish. In its youth the wine is superb, but this is a Riesling of substance which will develop beautifully.
