The mineral rich hills of Beechworth are Shangri-la for the realization of big boned Chardonnay wines in the like of Chablis. The mere 1.2 hectares of Piano Piano's vineyard make for an excruciatingly low yielding site, quality of fruit however is exceptional, the vinification is decidedly Burgundian. New oak ferments and vineyard yeasts are essential to the raison d'être of Sophie's Block, a mouthfilling Beechworth style to match west coast langoustine or suckling pork, caramelled goose liver or delicately seared abalone.

$4399each $527DOZEN EACH DOZEN Chardonnay is hand picked over the passage of two weekends to create a wine of complexity and depth, the first harvest adds grapefruit and tight mineral structure, the riper second pick contributes intensity and palate weight. Grapes are all sorted, destemmed and gently pressed. Fruit is treated to a wild, indigenous vinifiction over the course of a fortnight, through the action of ambient vineyard yeasts in a high proportion of the finest new French oak hogsheads and barriques. Ten months maturation and an occasional lees stirring battonage, achieves a powerful, multi dimensional wine of structure, complexity and amazing length.

Bright straw yellow hues. Attractive nose of dried herb, cashews and citrus bouquets, minerality and finely integrated oak. The palate is lively and complex, grapefruits and peach, nectarine flavours are supported by a seamless length of maple, tangelo and delicious caramel oak, resolving on a lasting finish of compote fruit and briny savouryness.

Picardy is a traditional Burgundian style of Chardonnay with impressive aromatics and profound fruit character. The wine possesses all requisite floral and fine grassy sour sob/ oxalis grass characters expected in a young Burgundy. Picardy offers great texture and solid structure with high acid and extraordinarily low pH whilst retaining perfect balance. Crafted from grapes grown to four clones of vine imported from France, selected over a decade of trials out of a field of several hundred, grown to some of the most illustrious vineyards in Burgundy.

$5199each $623DOZEN EACH DOZEN The history of Chardonnay at Picardy began when Bill and Sandra Pannell were fortunate enough to meet M. Vincent LeFlaive of the famous Puligny Montrachet, during his visit in 1989. Believing that Pemberton was ideal for the most refined styles of Chardonnay, Pannell decided to research the situation with respect to clones. Several hundred were trialled in Burgundy and four were selected, 76 and 95, 96 and 277, on the basis of the quality as opposed to yield. Twenty cuttings of each were imported into Western Australia, held in quarantine for the growing season of 1993 to 1994, replanted into the Picardy property the following spring. Picardy now has in excess of a thousand vines of each.

Bejewelled yellow colour. Bright and fresh, redolent with nectarine, while the oak adds a hint of spice and grilled nuts, very elegant, exhibiting minerally flavours, with the refinement and length of the great Burgundies, finishing on a note of citrus. The highlight is a purity of fine chardonnay fruit flavours, Picardy appeals as the quality of West Australian fruit shines within a fine Chablis styling.

The hamlet of Lenswood in Adelaide Hills produces wines of outstanding quality and distinctive character. Two eminent and long established winegrowing families have come together to nurture a distinguished vineyard amongst the undulating aspects. Pike & Joyce construct a brightly lit Pinot Gris without the oiliness or fatness that's sometime associated with the variety, drinking beautifully upon release.

$2699each $323DOZEN EACH DOZEN The Pike & Joyce vineyards are amongst the highest in Adelaide Hills at five hundred metres above sea level, giving the wines excellent natural acidity. The steep sloping terrain reduces the risk of frost. Vines are all hand pruned and handpicked, the fruit is chilled overnight in the Joyce cool rooms, before being transported to Pike's Clare Valley winery for vinification. Traditional old world techniques and modern Australian winemaking are incorporated to produce a style which reflects the variety and region. The fruit is lightly crushed and destemmed prior to pressing and fermentation. A brisk bottling upon completion captures and preserves the lovely Pinot Gris fruit character and Adelaide Hills charm.

Medium to pale green hue. Subtle notes of yellow peach and nectarine, nashi pear and nutmeg along with a little of the river stone minerality for of Adelaide Hills Pinot Gris. Medium bodied palate showing the flavours of stone fruits over a gentle creaminess which contributes texture and length. Well balanced acidity maneuvers the wine away from finishing heavy or cloying.

Another exquisite effort from the marvelous Pike & Joyce property at Lenswood. Not the in your face style of overtly fruity Sauvignon Blanc, Pike and Joyce shows freshness and concentration, but also restraint, subtlety and poise. Unequivocally advancing the case that there are alternatives to Sauvignon Blanc which differ delightfully to the syrupy styles from across the ditch. A perfect match to seared fresh shellfish drizzled with herb butter sauce.

$2699each $323DOZEN EACH DOZEN The Pike & Joyce owned and operated Lenswood Vineyard in Adelaide Hills produces wines of outstanding quality and distinctive character. One of the highest in the region at approximately 500 to 550 metres above sea level, the site contributes excellent natural acidity to the wines. Planted in the late 1990s, Lenswood represents a true cool climate vineyard, the steep sloping terrain reduces the risk of frost. Soils are gravelly, clay loams that drain extremely well. Grapes are hand harvested, lightly crushed and destemmed. Pure yeast cultures are added for delicacy. The winemaking team are quite happy to watch over the ferments during their formative stage and intervene only as necessary.

Brilliant, pale green / straw hue. Clean, fresh aromas of passionfruit, snowpea and a little citrus, backed up by notes of nettles and mineral. Quite complex. Fresh and zingy acidity on the palate keeps the wine bright and balanced finishing with a vibrant tropical /nettle flourish. Quite richly flavoured, but still has style, poise and a pleasantly dry, textural finish.
