181 - 192 of 260 Riesling
Pewsey Vale Contours Museum Riesling
Eden Valley
Available in cartons of six
The quality of fruit from Pewsey Vale Vineyard, higher up the contours of Eden Valley, is a reflection of altitude and low fertility, grey, sandy loam soils which prolong ripening late into the cool autumn. This longer season develops unique flavour profiles which are classic Pewsey Vale. Contours is Pewsey Vale's flagship, held back for five years under the estate cellars. The grapes themselves are picked from the oldest vines, established to contoured rows in 1962. This exceptional wine already shows signs of bottle development immediately upon release.

The unique clone of Riesling planted at Pewsey Vale in the 1800s can be traced back to some of the original vine cuttings brought into Australia by James Busby. Any new plantings are propagated from the original rootstock. The cooler temperatures found in the Eden Valley encourage a longer ripening period which extends well into autumn, essential for producing superior quality grapes with exceptional flavour and character. Lean and hungry soils limit the vigour of vines, necessitating specialised viticultural management. Block to block variation enables winemakers to select from separate parcels of fruit, tailoring wines to the Pewsey Vale style, ensuring consistency from vintage to vintage.

Light pale straw hue. A hint of toast overlies intense lime and citrus fruit. Citrus does dominate, lime peel and marmalade, finishing with a lemon drop crispness. Clean and dry with refreshing natural acidity, Contours is only just showing the first signs of bottle age after five years. The wine continues to evolve as it unravels layers of complexity, any sweet fruit characters will continue to retain vigour and vitality alongside the toasty, aged qualities.
Pewsey Vale Prima Riesling
Eden Valley
Available in cartons of six
Inspired by elder bottles of Pewsey Vale Riesling, Yalumba resolved to make an early harvest wine with lower alcohol, a fine balance of natural acids and idyllic levels of residual sugar. Prima is made from grapes picked three to four weeks before the rest of the vineyard. Chosen for their fine citrus flavours, grapes are carefully selected when their natural sugar levels are near 10° Baume. The wine is finished to a semi dry style which retains some of the fruit in balance with chalky mineral acidity, exhibiting purity of style, as it evoves layers of toastyness and spice.

In 1847 Joseph Gilbert planted a single acre of vines, establishing Eden Valley's pioneer sites and one of Australia's first high altitude, cool climate vineyards. Gilbert trialled many different grape varieties at Pewsey Vale, later distributing cuttings to aspiring growers in surrounding areas. Pewsey Vale eventually fell into disuse until 1961, when the estate's proprietor Geoffrey Angas Parsons, paid a visit to his good friend Wyndham Hill Smith at Yalumba with a proposal to restore the ancient Pewsey Vale Vineyard. Prima is bottled to enhance the exotic nature of this wine whilst preserving its pure fruit flavours. The naturally lower alcohol of the wine further heightens its refreshing character.

Very pale in colour with green hues. The aroma has a hint of the classic Pewsey Vale but is most redolent of lemon blossom, nectarines and lychees. The palate shows great length with a vibrancy of perfumed fruits such as guava and sweet peach overlaid with a touch of spicy clove. The balance of the wine is succulent and mouth watering as it invites a second glass. Exhibits a purity of style, slowly developing flavour layers of fresh toast and spice.
Pewsey Vale Riesling
Eden Valley

Pewsey Vale once succumbed to the fate of so many of Australia's great, foundation vineyards, falling into disuse as a result of severe economic hardship. The site's potential was rediscovered at a time when only the history books recorded any existence of the original plantings. The long ripening periods at such altitudes encourage rich flavour profiles, known today as classic Pewsey Vale. The winemaking is simple and natural, hand picked grapes are whole bunch pressed directly to older oak barrels for ferment by indigenous yeasts.

Merle expresses the slatey soils of the distinguished Pike vineyard. The Polish Hill subregion is considerably cooler than the rest of Clare Valley, imparting distinctive flavours and aromas into the ultimate wine. Vines are kept fresh with minimum levels of irrigation, just sufficient to keep the leaves intact and functioning, but not actually growing. This encourages all the vine's energy into ripening the fruit, optimizing flavour and aroma development in the process. Treated to the most exacting fruit selection and the highest standard of vinification, only the exclusively free run juices are included, Merle is inoculated to a mix of choice yeasts and coolly fermented without any malolactic.

Brilliant pale green colour. Pure, delicate citrus notes of lemon/ lime/ grapefruit with a twirl of regional slatey mineral character. Delicate, subtle and dry with vibrant lemon/ lime flavours tightly woven around a core of slate/ mineral acid that provides length and texture. A complex yet completely integrated, fully engaging wine.
Pikes Traditionale Clare Valley Riesling
Clare Valley
Available by the dozen
Henry Pike settled in the Adelaide Hills circa 1886, founding a brewery which made the finest beer and tonic ales in the colony. Every bottle was labelled with the English pike, a tradition which endures into the 21st century. Henry's great grandson, Edgar Walter Pike, was an established Clare Valley grower and vineyard manager who worked for a large proprietary wine company. His sons followed father's footsteps, today Andrew is one of the leading viticulturalists in Valley Clare and Neil is one of the region's most eminent winemakers.

Pikes extraordinary Riesling vines are planted to soils in the Polish Hill River area of the Clare Valley, generally regarded as one of the safest viticultural districts in Australia, in terms of pest and vine disease. The climate is considerably cooler and the soils are also quite unique to the rest of the region. The grapes positively flourish here in the red brown earth, clay and stoney soils. Fruit is harvested and pressed, inoculated by a pure yeast culture, then treated to vinification in controlled fermenters at a closely managed 12C to 15C for nigh on a month, retaining the lavish qualities of the inimitable Polish Hill. Pike Riesling is widely recognized for drinking beautifully from day one. Alcohol 11.5%

Brilliant pale green colour. Spotlessly clean and quite expressive bouquet, displaying citrus florals, apple and subtle notes of stone fruits and slate. Crisp, fresh and dry, loaded with waxy lemon and grapefruit flavours wrapped around a core of well balanced mineral acidity, adding length and focus to the finish.

The vineyards are vertically integrated through a rigorous regimen of site selection, viticultural development and management. The Pipers Brook vineyards are characterized by idyllic growing conditions. Grapes are encouraged to retain all the delicate but ripe, crisp varietal fruit flavours. Tasmania's cool climate when combined with close planting over gravely soil can yield a fine and delicate Riesling wine. Crop levels are maintained at low levels by bunch thinning to increase the intensity of flavours. Bunches are hand harvested throughout the early morning hours and cooled before an immediate processing to capture and retain the vivacious expression of the vineyard. Following the press, musts remain on skins to extract optimal flavours. A long cool ferment encourages retention of fresh fruit flavours while enhancing the bouquet.

Colour is a pale lemon. Lifted, perfumed nose with floral notes and traces of Asian tropical fruits. The palate is elegant and refined yet powerfully concentrated with traces of tangy citrus and tropical flavours, the overall balance is crisp and dry with a light skin tannin structure and soft mineral tones lifting the finish. In its youth the wine is superb, but this is a Riesling of substance which will develop beautifully.

Pooley Estate Riesling
Coal River
There are two places of the most profound provenance along Coal River Valley called Belmont and Richmond, just a short drive northeast of Hobart. Both are a part of the early Australian experience, places of great historical import, sites that were selected during first settlement on the basis of their fertile endowments and promise of pastoral opulence. The vineyards Cooinda Vale and Butchers Hill were trained to yield a restricted harvest of the most exclusive Tasmania Riesling. Its prominent nose of indulgent perfumes, white jasmines, lemon zest and peach, a mesmerisingly mandarin palate, moreish and mineral.
