Mt Difficulty Packspur Vineyard Pinot Noir
Central Otago
Available in cases of 6
Elite single vineyard Pinot Noir, Mt Difficulty reflects the virtue of painfully low yields and uncompromising standards of winemaking. The artisanal commune of dedicated growers have harnessed the once brutal terrains of New Zealand's deep south, to achieve vintages which set the benchmark for all new world wines. Packspur was established 1993 along a track that was used to pack supplies to the goldfields of Cardrona Valley. Three hectares of north facing Pinot Noir clones 5, 6, 115 and Lincoln Mix, were planted to escape the worst of Central Otago's withering winds.

Pinot Noir is harvested from Central Otago vineyards along the south side of Kawarau River, clones 5, 6 and 10/5, Dijon 113 and 115, 667 and 777, all selected on the basis of intense varietal expression. Grapes are all destemmed into fermenters for three or more weeks, as temperatures peak at 29C to 30C. Batches are plunged daily during the initial macerations and twice daily throughout the course of vinification. Upon completion, parcels are pressed off to French oak barrel for ten months on gross sedimentery lees and malolactic ferments during the following spring, racked out of barrel in mid summer and treated to light filtration for bottling.

Deep ruby colour. A meaty wine with a seductive entry, vibrant and fruit filled with a perfumed intensity. A lovely mix of red and black berries with beguiling complexity and fine integration gained from the spiced, aromatic oak. Persistence of sensual fruit with raspberry ripple creaminess and a savoury bite. Tannins rise gracefully out of the middle palate, in fine balance with the wine's acidity and fruit, to produce a long fruit driven finish.

Mt Fishtail's Waihopai and Wairau vineyards are moderate yielding, cool climate fruit parcels, closely cropped at four tons to the acre. The first blocks of vine were planted in the 1990s, in the highly favourable mesoclimes of Waihopai Valley. Quality is the absolute focus for Konrad Hengstler's Fishtail, it starts in the vineyard where no corners are cut. The attention to detail continues into the winery where every barrel is hand crafted from start to finish. Konrad's philosophy? That the best fertilizer is the foot of the farmer. Fruit is treated to controlled fermenters for optimal preservation of requisite Pinot Noir fragrant elegance, vibrant varietal complexity and seamless, velvety tannins.

Free draining loam soils over schist gravel make the property ideal for harvests of outstanding Pinot Noir. The huge diurnal temperature variation adds to the structure and concentration of the wine. Grapes are gently de stemmed, allowing whole berries to remain intact. After a week of cold soak, each parcel is separately vinified through mix of wild and cultured yeasts. Batches are hand plunged for optimal extraction of colour, flavour and tannin. Ferments are pressed into a selection of seasoned and new French oak barrels for completion of malolactic and a term of maturation before assemblage into the finished wine.

Ruby red colour. Aromas of dark cherry and berry fruits, spice, floral and dried herbs over a background of well intergrated oak. A smooth palate of dark cherry and bramble flavours, fine tannins in support, before an exquisite finish on a length of lingering black cherry flavours and balanced, raspberry acidity. Match your Mudhouse to twice cooked duckling or truffe et Port Salut soufflé.
