Giovanni Maglieri worked at Pirramimma in the late 1950s. He was joined by 17 year old Serafino in 1963, the father and son team bought forty hectares of scrub and set about the task of clearing it for vines. After founding one of McLaren Vale's most eminent wineries, Serafino embarked upon his own label, cultivating a lineage of the most memorable vintages in McLaren Vale viticulture. Soul Growers source fruit across the Barossa Valley floor, out to the high country of eastern Eden Valley ranges, from vineyards which are living history. Seppeltsfield and Tanunda, Krondorf and Langmeil Roads, Kalimna and Nuriootpa all make contributions. The work is completely manual, traditional techniques with minimal handling. The sacred cépage of Shiraz, Mourvedre and Grenache, has always been an essential tradition of Barossa winemaking, assembling the fruit of some glorious old vines into a seamless experience of heady perfumes, succulent fruit and gently undulating tannins.

The majority of Shiraz comes from high country vineyards near the Barossa foothills and the Eden Valley. Mataro and Grenache, Carignan and Cinsault are sourced from warmer, lower altitude sites on the Barossa floor. It's the lighter textured quartz and sandy topsoils that produce more perfumed, delicate aromatics and give finesse. Some grapes are off vines as old as sixty years, most Grenache is about thirty years, while some of the Shiraz and Mataro can be from vines that are well over a century old. Winemaker Peter Schell is isolating the finest parcels in the Barossa and Eden Valleys, getting a handle on these old blocks and their different characteristics, capturing and preserving what they have to offer.

Bright, dark scarlet hue. An appealing and intriguing aromatic spectrum that includes fresh red fruits, cherries, raspberry and plum skin over savoury secondary characters, fresh earth, roasted nuts and herb. A lovely subtlety and complexity on the fresh and lively palate, plum skins and red currant, smoke and dried herb, mineral notes line the palate. Savoury secondaryness on the finish, drying tannins make Esprit a classic wine for the table.

Spinifex Papillon
Barossa
Available in cartons of six
What Spinifex choose to do best is discover isolate parcels of old vine, sometimes overlooked or underloved, at the Cotes du Rhône end of the varietal spectrum. This is no flight of fancy, as the background of the husband and wife team includes many growing seasons in France. Papillon is bottled towards the end of vintage year. Crafted from very old material Grenache, Cinsualt and Mataro, Spinifex hand select the vines and pick grapes, vinifying the parcels with an aim of creating a wine that's all about freshness, fruit and spice, a wine that's bright and alive.

Spinifex make small quantities of unique hand crafted regional wines from the Barossa and Eden Valleys. Spinifex wines are fashioned into a more complete and complex, unique and characterful wine, always assembled from components that are the result of an interaction between variety, soil and mesoclime. Peter Schell vinifies everything at his estate wineworks in Bethany, Tanunda, where he also runs his own winemaking consultancy company. Over many years, Schell and his girl Magali Gely have worked for prominent Barossa brands, including tours of duty at the highly distinguished Mountadam and Turkey Flat, whilst also finding the time to work vintages in the south of France.

Bright and brilliant, ruby red. Very aromatic and bright, lifted cherry, red currant and spicy raspberry fruit are overlaid by pot pouri and exotic herb. With time in the glass reveals subtle warm earthy notes of beetroot, subtle white pepper and caraway spice. Distinctly medium weight on the palate with a lovely line of acidity and light, slightly sappy, fresh tannin dryness. Savoury spice and dried herbs building towards the end of palate.
