Pinot Noir clones MV6 and 114, 115 and DSV12 are all hand picked across several blocks on the TarraWarra property, off vines up to thirty years of age, grown to high north facing slopes where they can enjoy maximize exposure to the hours of sunshine. Northerly winds from Long Gully provide good air flow and favourable micro climes. Grapes are given ten days skin contact for optimal extraction followed by five days wild indigenous yeast vinification and completion of malolactic. The finished wine is aged in a mix of seasoned and new French oak 225L barrique and 500L puncheons by Francois Freres, Mercurey, Dargaud et Jaegle and Sirugue.

Vibrant raspberry colour. Cherry, dark berry and spice aromas, all the primary fruit characters of violets, sasafras and cherry showing through on the nose. The palate is fully flavoured with black cherry and red currant fruit flavours under a sprinkle of cool climate spice. There's an evenness and structure to the wine, as it's savoury, earthy, yet vibrant palate receives support from a backbone of refined tannins and balanced acidity.

Wantirna Estate Lily Pinot Noir
Yarra Valley
Wantirna Vineyard is a never ending journey of enchantment and surprise. Reg and Maryann Egan honed their practical skills amongst the small estates of Burgundy and Bordeaux. Vines are all dry farmed and the roots dig deep into the clay soils, searching for any available moisture. At times vigor and energy are needed, at times all that's required is patience. Established 1963, it was one of the first new generation Yarra Valley vineyards, the earliest plantings included an unclassified tally of arcane varietals and clones, many remain largely unknown.

Originally a large mixed farm, the historic red brick homestead dates back to the 1880s. There were remnants of it's past life scattered all over the property indicating that over time it has served as an orchard, dairy and sheep farm. The Homestead Block was planted to Pinot Noir in the late 1980s. Grapes are harvested by hand, destemmed and crushed, vinified in small fermenters with gentle cap management to extract maximum colour and quality tannins from the skins and seeds. After a total of sixteen days on skins to build structure, the batches are pressed and transferred immediately to a combination of new and prior use French oak barrels for the completion of malolactic and eleven months maturation.

Medium garnet hue. Black cherry and chocolate with earthy/beetroot complexity and subtle French oak. Quite rich cherry fruit upfront, with more complex herb and earthy flavours and French oak flavours building on the length of the palate. The wine has a silky texture and good middle palate volume with very fine grained tannins giving grip to the finish.
