Connor Park Durif
Bendigo
Available by the dozen
The Connor Park vineyards were planted by industrialist Tom Connor in the 1960s, with a view to establishing a test site for the development of the automatic grape harvester. It was acquired by the Lougoons in the 1980s, a family of pastoralists who learned quickly about the synergy between grazing and winemaking. A small parcel of closely cosseted Durif vines at Lake Marmal near Bendigo, yields a precious harvest of world class Durif grapes. A powerful, opaque wine with sizeable tannin, countered by a palate of remarkable intensity and profound length.

Ross and Robyn Lougoon divide their time between running a flock of 1800 merino sheep through dry and dusty paddocks, while growing premium dryland grapes to craft award winning wines. Livestock and vineyards are a perfect match, mutually compatible and holistic, an idyll for viticulture. Durif is all picked by hand, crushed and fermented while being hand plunged in open vats, adjacent to the sheep yards. Traditional vinification techniques are employed with the least possible human intervention. Upon completion, components are gently basket pressed into a selection of American oak barrels for a year's maturation. Only a few hundred cases of Connor Park Durif are produced each year.

Deep, bright crimson, you immediately know this is a serious wine. Intense black cherry and gunsmoke nose, raspberries and anise, olive and dried herb. The palate does not let you down, full bodied, intense black plum flavours and smokey oak, rich fruit dominates, supported by firm tannin structure and a veneer of background oak. A no brainer alongside char grilled steak.

Passing Clouds Graemes Blend
Bendigo
Graeme's Blend is the Passing Cloud flagship. Eponymously labelled after the proprietor winemaker, Graeme's Blend has consistently delivered a cornucopia of breathtaking Bendigo fruit every year since inaugural vintage 1980. Parcels of Cabernet and Shiraz grown to eminent Bendigo sites are assembled around the backbone of estate grown fruit to create a complex, more powerful wine.

Passing Clouds is a small hands on operation employing traditional techniques. The story began in 1973 when Graeme Leith and Sue Mackinnon decided that they wanted to brave the elements, face the challenges of the land and pursue the holy grail of making the best wine in the world. Sheltered by hills of ironbark forest, the Passing Clouds valley offers an ideal mesoclime for red varietals. Low rainfall and deep, well drained soils produce small harvests of intensely flavoured fruit. Cabernet and Shiraz grapes are hand picked and vinified in open fermenters, hand plunged, treated to malolactic and matured in a selection of seasoned and new, French and American oak hogsheads and barriques for a year. Alcohol 14.0%

Dark Japanese plum colour, an indication of its power. Complex aromas of dark fruits are interwoven by vanilla , aniseed and spice. Rich complex aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant and spice follow through onto the palate, lined by a veneer of gentle oak. A superb balance of tannin and acidity complemented by lingering fruit, beautifully balanced on a length of fine chalky tannins.

Deep scarlet in colour. The addition of Viognier adds elegance and seductiveness to the aromatics and transforms the tannins to silk without compromising any of the full bodied power and rich blackberry, dark cherry fruits and complex spices of the Shiraz. Pondalowie has fantastic palate structure, balance and length, matured in older oak barrels to retain the rich fruit concentration.

Terra Felix was originally launched as the second label to the highly respected Tallarook Wines, it has grown in stature to become a unique label in it's own right. Using excess grapes from Tallarook and surrounding vineyards, Terra Felix immediately caught the attention of the industry press. It was decided that Terra Felix should reposition itself and concentrate largely on using Rhone varietals. And why not? The growing conditions around Tallarook bear an uncanny resemblance to the northern Rhone. Harvested from a special site near Bendigo which is trained to deliver vintages of the finest Mourverdre grapes, yields are kept moderate, producing grapes of outstanding flavour and intensity.
