Pizzini Arneis
King Valley
Available by the dozen
Pizzini delight in the diversity of Italian varietal wines, grown to the idyllic microclimes of Victoria's Alps. Alfred Pizzini pioneered Arneis in the King Valley after establishing that the area was so very highly suited to Italian white wine grapes. Viticulture here is a highly specialized affair which requires skillful clonal planting regimes and vine trellising techniques. Old world tradition and new world skill achieve a fresh, crisp Arneis wine with lingering flavours of green apple, nashi pears and tropical fruits, a good match with crisp skin chicken or ripe hard cheese.

The Pizzinis established their property as a tobacco farm before being encouraged by Brown Brothers of Milawa to grow wine grapes. The Pizzini property is now planted to vines on the gentle undulating slopes of King Valley and lower down on the second terrace flats leading to King River. The vineyard enjoys a well drained north easterly aspect with red volcanic soils containing a high level of decaying basalt on the slopes and gravely, sandy clay loam soils on the second terrace. The aim at Pizzinni is to strike the perfect balance between healthy, sustainable viticulture and controlled yields, so that the vineyard is better able to produce quality fruit with a concentration of flavour, translating into balanced, mouthfilling wines.

Bright green tinged yellow in the glass. Aromatics of green apples and lime, spices and white petalled flowers jump from the glass. Plenty of mountain fresh fragrance with fresh cut yellow pear fruits, the merest hints of citrus and fresh almond. The palate's crisp, dry and fresh, really bracing yet gentle, with pear and apple flavour sitting bright and crunchy from start to mouth watering finish.

Pooley Estate Pinot Grigio
Coal River
The textural excitement and arcadian funk of a mostly whole bunch pressed Pinot Grigio. A minor part of the harvest is separately picked and destemmed for twenty days of ferment on skins, gently hand plunged every other day for a modicum of extraction. Batches are pressed off skins and assembled into the finshed wine before a requisite spell of maturation on fine lees. Nashis, pears and bright persimmon spice, her palate is plush and generously fleshed but held firm through fine grape tannins and lacy acids, mouthfilling of pears, applejack and aromatic white floral.

Fruit is sourced from a ten hectare vineyard at Monteforte D'Alpone, very near the heart of Soave Classico DOC. Exclusively Garganega grapes from vines between twenty and thirty years of age, grown to a southern exposure on good volcanic soils, trained to Pergola Veronese positioning, are normally vintaged from mid September to October. Grapes are harvested and treated to a soft pressing, vinfied in controlled fermenters at temperatures between 16C and 18C, retaining the inimitable qualities of the indigenous Garganega varietal, while capturing and preserving all the charming regional characters of Soave Classico within the finished wine.

Crystalline, straw yellow hue. Intense and persistent bouquets, delicate florals mingle with notes of pebble, hay notes, sage leaf and slate. An exotic palate of straw and herb notes, savouryness and nut characters. Well rounded with lots of flavour, crisp mineral edge before a long and pleasantly dryng, characterful finish.
