Shiraz is an important part of Coonawarra tradition, indeed the oldest vines ever established, circa 1890 were Shiraz. Wynns Johnsons Shiraz was planted in 1925 and can best be remembered for producing the timeless and enduring vintages of Wynns Coonawarra Hermitage. Wynns planted Shiraz to prime sites throughout the 1990s, the quality of fruit from these choice vineyards has improved from year to year, they are now fully mature and yield harvests of the finest Coonawarra Shiraz.

Black Label is crafted from the pick of the Wynns crop, a superb example of Coonawarra’s cool climate style. Setting the precise time of vntage to a schedule determined by complete ripeness of each individual parcel, translates into richer, even more concentrated Shiraz wines. Following harvest and the crush, fruit is cold settled for optimal extractions and partially vinified before transfer into a selection of new and prior use French oak hogsheads and barriques for completion of ferments and extended maturation.

Launched in 1952 as Coonawarra Estate Claret, Wynns have long maintained the reputation as producer of Coonawarra's most essential Shiraz. It's patent aromas are reminiscent of ground black pepper, mulberry and raspberry, through to blackberry at the riper end of spectrum. Oak is used to mature and increase the wine's complexity, without dominating its distinctive cool climate Coonawarra Shiraz character. Coonawarra enjoys a microclimate which provides a great opportunity to make wines of classic varietal character and longevity. The origins of Wynns go back to the late 1800s when Scotsman John Riddoch built the historic triple gabled winery, a building which today graces the Wynns label. In 1951 Samuel Wynn, who emigrated from Poland in 1913, with his son David, bought Riddoch's old property. The devotion and persistence of the Wynn dynasty in delivering benchmark Coonawarra Shiraz persists to this day. The finished wine is aged for a year in a combination of new and prior use French and American oak barrels.

Bright vibrant colour with vivid purple hues. Packed with mulberries, rhubarb and red cherry, overlaid by pepper and floral notes. The first Michael, labelled as Hermitage, was a special edition from the 1955 vintage, made after David Wynn noticed the outstanding quality of wine within two particular barrels, he ordered they be bottled separately. Michael vintage 1955 is an industry legend, good bottles of the original release still represent a memorable tasting experience. A regal Shiraz wine from nothing but the very finest Coonawarra vineyards, only made in years when fruit is of extraordinarily high quality.

Originally surveyed in the late 1840s, the lane divides the original electorates of Victoria and Albert. Traditionally it has been used as a landmark to separate northern and southern vineyards, it is in itself, a prestigious, highly sought locality for growing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The vineyards along V & A Lane are amongst Wynns most prized viticultural assets. The finished wine is treated to seventeen months maturation in a combination of mostly new French and American oak barrels.

Deep crimson colour. An alluring perfume of black cherries and violet, plums and creamy French oak. Soft tannins coat the palate leaving a rich layering of supple blackberry and chocolate flavours in the mouth. Zema own a precious slice of Coonawarra's remarkable Terra rossa, a thin metre of soil over deep formation of limestone, whence to source limited harvests of world class Shiraz. Family Selection is a small batch wine of great intensity and exceptional depth, superior concentration and maximum development. These practices are enhanced by the Zema team's three strategically selected prime vineyard locations, capitalising on Coonawarra's subtle climactic variations. Shiraz is vinified for a week on skins under strict temperature controls. A portion is barrel fermented to enhance complexity. Components are matured for two years in a selection of small French and American oak barrels, fully integrating the fruit, tannins and oak into a vibrant rich wine with profound bouquet and attractive flavours.
