Majella Cabernet Sauvignon
Coonawarra
Available in cartons of six
Excellent Langtons Classification. One of the Coonawarra's most feted marques in Cabernet Sauvignon. The Majella property was originally acquired for the purpose of grazing lamb. Eric Brand of neighbouring Laira Vineyard offered to buy fruit from Majella if the land was turned over to Cabernet. The site was planted in 1968, much of the vintages that followed went to Wynn's, but it was not until 1993 that Majella vinified and bottled its own estate labelled wine. The inaugural release was enthusiastically received and Majella have never looked back.

The Lynns have lived at Penola for over four generations, a merchant family, they ventured into grazing. They met with success for their prize Merinos before extending the operations to raising lamb on a piece of choice Coonawarra terroir. Viticulture was the last thing on their minds. The site is now one of the most precious Cabernet vineyards in Coonawarra. Grapes are harvested and brought to the Majella estate wineworks. Fruit is treated to a cool fermentation over the course of several days before transfer to a selection of 300 litres French oak hogsheads for completion of primary ferments, a course of full malolactic and an extended maturation of eighteen months.

Deep, magenta colour. Cherries, choc mint and blackberries, hints of eucalyptus and vanillin oak. Fruit on the attack, structured with layers of flavour, an elegant, medium bodied style. Rich with ripe dark fruits and well weighted, grainy tannins. As ever the finish is long and lingering, a Coonawarra Cabernet of substance and style that will stand the test of time. Varietal definition is its strong point, the tannins are refined, brains, beauty and style, it's a real winner.
Majella Coonawarra Merlot
Coonawarra
Available in cartons of six
Coonawarra Merlot is every bit as elegant, fragrant and generously proportioned as the mighty Cabernet, often assembled together for a rounded, softer style of red, Merlot provides a plummy, chamois tannined option when bottled as a pure varietal wine. Majella take their duty to the soil and environment very seriously, they are as fastidious about the health of local flora and fauna, as they are about maintaining the purity and hygiene of their fruit. The dividends come in the form of an immaculate Merlot wine of faultless varietal eloquence and graceful regional charm.

Majella reserve the most outstanding Coonawarra Cabernet and Shiraz for Malleea. After prompting by many of their industry peers, the stakeholders at Majella made a few hundred cases of Shiraz in 1991 for bottling under the estate label. The wine was vintaged at Brand's Laira under the ever watchful eye of maestro Bruce Gregory. It was received exceptionally well and led to a stellar inaugural release of Cabernet in 1994. In the most outstanding vintages, Majella assemble the finest parcels of fruit from their oldest vines and treat them to a gentle vinification before completing ferments in new French oak hogsheads. Components are matured eighteen months, followed by bottling in imported fine Italian glass.

Years of grazing on the Majella property enriched the soils and prepared the ground for viticulture. The Majella team still run a few thousand Merino wethers and raise a few hundred prime lambs. Since then, the Majella vineyards have been the source of the most highly prized Coonawarra grapes for many well regarded national brands. The very best of Majella's fruit, the pick of crop, is retained for the estate's own label. A slightly greater proportion of Cabernet to Shiraz, The Musician is a generously complex Coonawarra wine that's approachable and engaging immediately upon release.

Deep scarlet in colour. Vibrant, unmistakably Coonawarra to smell and taste, bursting with flavours of blackcurrant, mulberry and herbs, fine, elegant and juicy in the mouth. Musician is quite low in oak, just a smidge of vanillin showing faintly on the mid palate, the brambly, blackcurrant flavours demand all the attention. Majella was acquired by George Lynn in 1960 as part of an up and coming lamb enterprise. He had always been great friends with Eric Brand, who'd just started producing his illustrious Laira label. Eventually, seventy acres of about 60% Shiraz were planted, but as the vines matured in the 1970s, demand for grapes, particularly Shiraz was very low, and there were a couple of years when thirty or more tonnes of premium grapes were left to rot. Today, Majella stands proudly in first place on the Coonawarra Shiraz dais. As always the fermentation is completed in a selection of French and American oak hogsheads, followed by an extended eighteen months maturation.

Dark red colour with purple hues. Redolent of cinnamon spice with overlays of cedary mocha oak. The palate shows great length, full of plums, cherries, blackberries and vanilla, creamy and sweet. Tannins are soft and dusty, complementing the long, lingering finish. Coonawarra Shiraz at its very best. A decadent accompaniement to cherry glazed duck or crackling rib of pork.
