The Kalleske Greenock block consists of shallow, sandy loam soil over superb deep red clay and limestones, providing ideal conditions for Shiraz vines. Fruit is picked in separate batches over the course of a week off the auspicious Greenock block. Grapes are destemmed into open top fermenters. Each parcel is fermented separately at warm temperatures with hand pumpovers twice daily for a week or two. After pressing off skins, batches are filled to a high proportion of new French and American oak hogsheads for completion of primary ferments and natural malolactic. Following assemblage, Greenock is matured fourteen months, prior to bottling without any fining or filtration.

Deep purple black colour. Bright and lifted bouquet, blackberries and cherry, fruit cakes and ripe plum, mocha and oriental spice. Ripe black fruit flavours continue on the powerful, full-bodied, intensely pure palate, complimented by subtle oak barrel characters. Natural tannins are lightly chalky but fine, adding structure to support the strength of fruit. A sophisticated wine of great balance, completed by a solid lingering finish.

The top soil is fortuitously sandy with excellent clay subsoil. Fruit is selectively hand harvested, grapes are gently destemmed into a small open top fermenter and vinified over the course of a week or more on skins, hand pumpovers are applied twice daily. After a time, the musts are basket pressed into a selection of new and prior use French oak hogsheads for the completion of ferments. Johann Georg is treated to two years maturation before bottling, completely unfiltered and unfined.

Kalleske Moppa Shiraz
Barossa
Available in cartons of six
The Moppa district was a flourishing settlement of pioneering farmers and gold miners. When the Kalleske vineyard was established in 1853, there were few schools in the region, so local parents established the Moppa Public School to provide their children with a formal education. Located right on the Kalleske property, generations attended this school until its closure in 1935. Sourced entirely off the Kalleske Certified Organic Moppa Vineyard, a trace of Viognier and Petit Verdot are added to Shiraz, achieving a stylish and contemporary edge.

Shiraz is harvested off low yielding vines planted to shallow, sandy loam over deep red clays. A component of Viognier is picked and set aside for co vinification. Petit Verdot is a late ripener and remains on the vine slightly longer. All batches are given a warm vinification in open top fermenters while being treated to a course of manual pumpovers twice daily. After a week or two on skins, ferments are traditionally pressed and transferred to a selection of new and seasoned French and American and Hungarian oak hogsheads. After thirteen months maturation, a small portion of Petit Verdot and Viognier are assembled into the final wine for added complexity before bottling without fining or filtration.

Dense purple indigo colour. Dark cherry niotes, blond tobacco, fruit cake and blueberry, anise and a hint of cinnamon. The palate is a burst of pure fruit complimented by subtle background oak. Dark, rich and full bodied yet elegant and sophisticated. Layers of fleshy red and black fruits together with floral notes, balanced by fine, slightly minerally tannins adding a seamless structured backbone. A very lengthy finish completes this generous wine.

Langmeil Freedom 1843 Shiraz
Barossa
Excellent Langtons Classification. The Freedom Block was established 1843, planted to vine by Lutheran settlers, Christian Auricht and his kin, early pioneers who were escaping persecution and war, just seven years after South Australia was colonised. They found freedom to work, worship and prosper in the Barossa. The Freedom has not only survived but thrives to this day, it yields an extraordinary Shiraz wine. These thick trunked, dry grown, low yielding, gap toothed old vines on the banks of North Para River, may be the oldest surviving Shiraz in Australia.

A single vineyard wine of rare excellence. When the current operators acquired Freedom, these sacred parcels had lain unattended for almost a decade. After four years of devoted hand pruning and careful viticulture, the precious vines were nursed back to manageable conditions. These dry grown, hand pruned old vines yield less than two tonnes per acre, surrendering only the most exceptional grapes exhibiting extreme intensity of flavour. Grapes are hand picked, gently crushed and treated to an open fermentation and basket pressing into a selection of mostly new French oak barriques for two years maturation, handled in such a way as to preserve the integrity of the Freedom 1843 vineyard.

Medium to deep red crimson with purple hues. Satsuma plum and lifted raspberry perfume mingle with lovely biscuit and vanillin French oak, hints of menthol and sweet spice. Rich, sweet fruit flows onto the palate, balanced by fine, well integrated French oak. Velvety smooth yet youthfully austere tannins and good acidity adds to the balance with the sweet and slightly briar spice flowing through onto the long and bright fruited finish.
