Willows Cabernet Sauvignon
Barossa
Available by the dozen
The vineyard grows along the banks of the North Para River and the fruit is harvested late in the season when the flavours are fully developed, tannins are ripe and sugar levels high. Vineyard specific fruit characters of mint and a touch of Eucalypt are the hallmarks of this Barossa Cabernet. Exhibiting the richness and warmth of fruit one would expect from the region, this is a wine of great varietal flavour, combining stylish fruit characters along with rich chocolate hints which are typically associated with good Barossa reds.

Deep dark red. Brooding Barossa bouquet, currants and cassis, varietal leaf. Extended maturation in French oak hogsheads over two years has helped create a long, soft, silky texture. The complexity of black fruits, integrated oak and fine ripe tannins combine to make this a wine of immediate appeal, or enjoy through next ten years.

Peter and Michael Scholz's Australian story began in 1845 when forty year old Johann Gottfried joined his neighbours to flee the religious persecution of his Silesian homeland, emigrating to a fertile valley on the other side of the world. Planted in 1936, Willows Vineyard is located on the banks of Para River near the village of Light Pass, a site enivigorated by cooling gully breezes during vintage, providing slow ripening and a clearer expression of spicey berry flavours in the Shiraz. Treated to a regimen of taditional winemaking techniques, the powerful fruit has been tamed by two years maturation in American oak hogsheads, bringing structure to the palate and endowing the wine with soft, ripe tannins.

Dense, vibrant colour. Very ripe, sweet fruit, reminiscent of plum, blackberry and pepper bouquet. A beautiful rich red, the heady scents slide into the pure mint and blackcurrant palate, joined by the extra dimension of light sweet eucalypt. Generous, ripe and mouth filling, showing gorgeous berry and cinnamon spice flavours, along with oak derived mocha overtones and harmonies over soft yet well defined tannins.

Zeppelin Barossa Valley Ferdinand Shiraz 2010
Barossa
Ferdinand is fashioned from fruit grown to a single low yielding, eighty years old vineyard in the ancient winemaking commune of Greenock. A very simplistic hands off approach to the vinification followed by extending ageing in a selection of well seasoned oak barrels softens the tannins while allowing the sensational character of old vines Barossa Shiraz to speak for itself. The nose is engaging and complex, the palate generous and full bodied, tame oak and supple tannins, a brooding, no holds barred example of the classic Barossa style.

The Herren Ryan und Teusner are well schooled at hand making hearty wines exhibiting real style and true personality. They take an interest in restoring old sites with a view to crafting small batches of outstanding single vineyard wines. Ferdinand is sourced from a precious site at Greenock where the vines are planted to rich sand over clay soils at altitudes of 245 metres. Shiraz is vinified in traditional open top fermenters and pumped over twice daily by hand, followed by a good old fashioned basket press and completion of ferments in barrel. Batches are transferred to an equal balance of new and seasoned French oak for thirty months maturation before bottling without any fining or filtration.

A deeply coloured wine. Nose displays black fruits, dark chocolate and brazil nuts over a hint of smoky oak. The palate is rich and textural, packed with dark, dark fruit, beautifully fresh and the oak pleasantly subdued. Towards the finish, earth complexity and fine tannins take over to leave a lasting impression.

A highly traditional, minimalist approach to winemaking preserves the character of the good vineyard fruit and expression of terroir. Harvests of intensely flavoured Shiraz grapes are treated to an extended maceration, open fermentations, manual pumpovers and basket pressing, followed by maturation in a selection of predominantly older French oak barrels for a year. Big Bertha remains unfined and is bottled with minimal sulphur addition to maximise fruit expression.

Deep red in colour. Expansive nose of fragrant dark cherries and fruit, flowers, pepper and meats. The conspicuously low yields of some great old Barossa vineyards makes their fruit unviable for commercial brands. Only the most skilled and knowledgeable small batch winemakers have the dedication to handle such precious parcels of old vines fruit. Shiraz is picked off a single site in the Angaston foothills, planted to sand over clay soils, growing at an elevation of 275 metres. Fruit is crushed into traditional open top fermenters and treated to a course of manual pumpovers, twice daily throughout the vinification. Upon completion, batches are basket pressed and racked into a selection of seasoned oak barrels for an extended term of twelve to eighteen months, to be bottled without fining or filtration.

Dark crimson colour. Aromas of intense and brightly perfumed primary red fruits dominate the nose, a herbaceous edge adding complexity. Plenty of richness on the palate, supple flavours of cherry and raspberry supported by hints of chocolate, balanced acidity and silky tannins. A simply brilliant construct of approachable, single vineyard Barossa Shiraz.
