In the vineyards, the family and their vignerons are flat out supervising the contract teams around Marlborough and Waipara. Vines are covered with nets to protect the fruit from local fauna. At full physiological ripeness, fruit is harvested in the cool of the night and transported to the winery in one tonne bins where it is gently pressed. Martinborough's first ever vines were planted on the Te Kairanga Draper vineyard, whence the fruit for this very wine originates. The vines here grow less vigorously in the cool, breezy conditions, so yields are lower and flavours are more intense. A rare confluence of geology and geography has formed the perfect aspects for aromatic whites. Grapes are harvested block by block and separately vinified to a regimen of punch downs and gentle pressing to ensure full extraction without sacrificing elegance. Much of the emphasis is on developing palate weight, a portion is barrel fermented to complement the wonderfully intense fruit, retaining primary flavours along with complexities derived from the vineyard.

The palate has low acid and a generous mouthfeel over a slightly creamy texture. An exuberance of citrus and tropical fruit dominates, showing excellent weight balanced perfectly by fresh acidity.

These gravel threaded clays are renowned for producing wines of richness and texture. The first vines were planted on rich river loam beside the mouth of the Motueka River. Vibrant, fertile river flats with loamy, sandy soils, in conjunction with careful vineyard management ensure vigourous growth in the Motueka and Riwaka vineyards, while the heavier but no less fertile soils of the Moutere are coupled with incredibly hot temperatures. These climes produce mouthfilling wines with an array of aromas and flavours.
