Castelli Empirica Tempranillo
Geographe
Crafted from parcels of hand picked Tempranillo grapes, grown to the exquisite Mazza Vineyard at Donneybrook, an hour's drive northeast of Margaret River. The greater Geographe region has been an essential component in west coast wines for many vintages, the quality of harvests rival her salubrious neighbours. An eloquent articulation of a splendid terroir and the fruit of closely cossetted vines, its classic old world savouriness, gardeniere complexity and light fresh tannins make Empirica the first choice alongside crackling pork or supple lamb recipes.

Castelli have chosen to fashion their harvest in a manner which highlights the bright berry fruit aromas and showcases the lovely savoury tannins which define Tempranillo. Parcels of hand picked fruit are crushed into small open top fermenters for several days of cold soak maceration. Batches are hand plunged twice daily for gentle extraction of colour, flavour and tannin. Upon completion, ferments are transferred to a selection of two and three year old French oak barriques for fifteen months maturation, integrating the wine while taming the tannins. A minimal influence of oak is essential to the style, seasoned oak achieves balance and structure while preserving the elegance of fruit.

Parcels are harvested throughout the cool of night from Chrismont's splendid King Valley vineyards and treated to a pre-ferment cold soak maceration. The crushed musts are inoculated with choice yeasts and vinified in controlled fermenters at temperatures peaking to 25C. Components are given a fortnight on skins for optimal extraction of good colour and tannin. The wines are aged in a selection of seasoned oak barriques for up to a year before assembling into the finished wine.

Deep red black colour, crimson hues. A touch of soft chocolate, dark plum and violets with a hint of confectionary and background cedar. Dark fruit richness of blackcurrant and mulberry, supported by velvety, plumy textures. A rich, ripe weighty palate in excellent balance over fine grain, dry tannins and an intense, rounded and persistent finish. Enjoy with duck breast, rissoles or lamb.

Rioja
Available in cartons of six
Established 1889, the winemaking heritage of Martínez Bujanda has consistently relied on the family belief, as growers, that great wine is made in the vineyard. After nearly a hundred years as mainstay grapegrower of the Rioja region, the family began construction of their own winemaking operation, Bodegas Valdemar. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Conde de Valdemar pioneered modernity in the Rioja region's wines. dArenberg Sticks Stones Tempranillo Grenache
McLaren Vale
Available by the dozen
Chester Osborn was one of the first growers to plant Tempranillo in McLaren Vale. This torrid Spanish grape is well suited to the Mediterranean climes of the region and a traditional blending partner for some of d'Arenberg's favourite old world styles. Grenache and Tempranillo work beautifully together, the Portuguese mix of Tinta Cao and Souzao provide wonderful complexity and depth. And the quirky name? Sticks and stones may break bones but will never hurt, in truth, much of the fruit is picked off sticks planted to parched, stony soils.

Bunches of Tempranillo and Grenache, Souzao and Tinta Cao Souzao are picked to a staggered schedule as the varieties come into their own ripening. Fruit is gently treated to d'Arenberg's rubber toothed crusher, vinified batch by batch in traditional headed down open fermenters. When tannin extraction is just right, batches are basket pressed and transferred to a mix of seasoned and new French and American oak barriques for completion of ferments and malolactic on sedimentery yeast lees. Components are aged for a year before asemblage, minimal handling ensures maximum flavour while reducing the oak influence, unfined and unfiltered, a harmless deposit may adhere to the bottle.

Deep, brilliant red. An enticing mix of red, black and purple fruits, wild strawberries and dark cherry, grilled meats and straw notes. Sour plum and red berry flavours, quickly leading to game, five spice and dried herb, Tempranillo provides tomato leaf and baked red fruits, linear shape and length. Grenache lends juicy blueberry and plum with just a hint of clove, succulence and fine, gritty tannins.
