Train Trak Cabernet Sauvignon
Yarra Valley
Available by the dozen
The first Train Trak vines were planted in the 1990s and nurtured thereafter by the superior viticultural practices of John Evans. The vineyard's name relates to a train track which runs through the property over a quaint trestle bridge. Built in the 1800s, it was an important link to the Yarra Valley and is still a significant landmark traversing the local vineyards and pasture. Parcels of intensely ripe hand picked, estate grown Yarra Glen grapes are crafted into an exceptionally balanced Cabernet wine with well integrated French oak and fine, drying tannins.

The winemaking at Train Trak is a modern adaptation of traditional techniques. Barrel treatments in French oak and gentle plunging of open top ferments are old world techniques which ensure all the intense Yarra Valley flavours and characters are extracted. A state of the art temperature control and wholistic viticulture all contribute to the intensity and balance in the wine. Following destemming and the crush, fruit is treated to a warm fermentation followed by a spell of maceration to enhance flavours and build texture. Components are pressed off skins, settled and racked to a selection of new and seasoned French oak barrels for an extended maturation.

Deep ruby colour. Lifted bouquets of bramble and raspberry, mulberries and subtle vanilla oak. A fine and elegant palate, medium bodied and layered with dark fruit, a concentration of brambleberry and cassis over savoury briar and earth notes. Seamless balance, structure and length, over a course of silky, finely grained tannins which run the length of palate right to the long, lingering finish.

Shiraz is harvested off low yielding vines to the most appropriate schedules, ensuring optimum balance, ripeness and intensity of flavour. Grapes are destemmed but not crushed or pumped, to preserve their physical integrity. Berries are transferred to a mix of open 4000 litres wooden and steel 5000 litres vats, the Viognier is co-fermented with Shiraz in vat to preserve fruit flavour intensity. A majority of the batches are naturally vinified and treated to a combination of different maceration times, mainly pumped over, from fifteen to thirty days on skins. Turners Crossing is aged in a combination of finely coopered, seasoned French oak barrels for eighteen months.

Heathcote is one of Australia's most exciting red wine regions. Spotting this potential some years ago, Bruce Tyrrell recognized the significance of the region for Shiraz very early on, placing a priority on locating and developing the best possible site for inclusion into the estate's portfolio. Tyrrell secured over eighty acres of prime land which today produces wines with an extreme weight of fruit. Parcels of Heathcote Shiraz are gently destemmed and separately vinified in a combination of open and closed fermenters, an inclusion of Viognier adds opulence and lift. Batches are matured two years in predominately French oak barriques, racked several times before assessing and determining the final assemblage.

Dense red/purple colour. A great lift of mulberry and plum fruit to the bouquet, soft, integrated, spicy, chocolate oak. The palate is rich and robust whilst maintaining the finesse of Heathcote. The intense, berry fruit flavours, richness and mouthfilling appeal makes it a fine accompaniment to lamb, beef and game.
