Bleasdale Broad Side Shiraz Cabernet

The traditional Australian claret style of Shiraz and Cabernet with a touch of Malbec. Bleasdale have been at it for generations, the masters at producing honest, reliable red wine. There's an urban myth among Bleasdale's community of local growers, that you have to have double letters in your name before you can be a winemaker at Langhorne Creek. Estate patriarch Lloyd Stanley Sticky Potts may have established the tradition. Potts was a motorcycling enthusiast all his life, the label depicts him practicing a broadside turn.

Bleasdale was Langhorne Creek's first winery and remains today Australia's second oldest, family owned operation. The vineyards are situated on the fertile plains of Bremer River, which floods annually nourishing the soils. Historic cellars, constructed from eucalypt and limestone house a massive redgum lever press which fifth generation winemaker, Michael Potts still uses to crush grapes. Much of Langhorne Creek's fruit traditionally went into multi-regional blends and wasn't acknowledged until the 1990s when a group of growers, most notably Bleasdale, started promoting Langhorne Creek as a pure regional wine. Broadside is matured for a year in a selection French and American oak barrels.
 
Red with robes of purple. Nose of pepper, violets and five spice, red and black berries, dried herb and savoury leaf. A harmony of varietal fruit on the palate, blackcurrants and Cabernet cassis, chocolates, pepper and Shiraz plum, boysenberry spice of Malbec. A rigorous tasting selection of the best barrels Malbec from a superior Langhorne Creek site, only ever made to small batch techniques in the most exceptional vintage years. Fruit is destemmed and open fermented, pumped over four times daily and pressed into a selection of well seasoned French oak puncheons for malolactic and a year's maturation. The ultimate expression of Malbec from Bleasdale, rich and full bodied, intense violet, boysenberry and black olive characters throughout, powerful fruit flavour and firm grape tannin structure.

Frank Potts established the Bleasdale vineyards in 1850, his eponymously labelled wine commemorates a legacy of innovation and resourcefulness. Frank Potts is a Bordeaux styled Cabernet which may contain varying portions of Malbec or Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc or Merlot depending on the performance of vintage. A litany of trophies and gold for the Bleasdale flagship, highly rated in many Jimmy Watson taste offs, Frank Potts has also claimed gold and trophy for best Australian red at the prestigious London International Wine Challenge.

Langhorne Creek's founding winery, Bleasdale Estate is today owned and operated by the fifth generation of the Potts family. A cépage of Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc, Malbec, Merlot and Verdot, the very best parcels grown to Bleasdale's vineyards are reserved for Frank Potts. The essential qualities of this national icon are derived from the precious vines which are mostly flood plain grown, planted to rich, silty soils which provide the nourishments and infuse the fruit. Grape yields may be low but the quality is always superb. Frank Potts is treated to a year's maturation in a combination of new and prior use French oak hogsheads and puncheons, before a light egg white fining.
 
A deep, red/purple coloured wine. Frank Potts explodes with a great perfume. Powerful flavours of blackberry and cassis, chocolates and mint, raspberries and plum, dark cherries and violet, richness and texture, all integrating beautifully with the very subtle French oak, finishing long with a lovely sweet fruit richness.

The first colonists to arrive in South Australia were brought to Kangaroo Island aboard HMS Buffalo in 1836. Sharing the journey was a veteran of the Royal Navy who had served aboard Lord Nelson's flagship HMS Victory. Frank Potts was an accomplished sailor and carpenter, he built many of the young colony's structures and trading vessels. The heritage listed wineworks at Bleasdale are only part of his legacy, six generations later, the Potts family call upon the original hand made basket press to process the fruit of vines established by Mr Potts in 1858.

Exclusively Langhorne Creek Shiraz and nothing but the finest of the pick. Bleasdale are one of the new world's great dynasties of wine, still in family hands after six generations of viticulture. Founder Frank Potts was a legendary figure who built much of the new colony's townworks. Fruit is destemmed into traditional open fermenters and pumped over several times daily, drained and pressed after a fortnight and racked to a selection of new and seasoned French and American oak hogsheads and puncheons for a year's maturation.

Potts built much of Adelaide's early colonial works before settling down to his homestead at Langhorne Creek. The Bleasdale vineyards are fortuitously planted on the fertile flood plains of Bremer River, a confluence of auspicious terroirs and clime which yield the most superlative wines year after year. Conditions encourage the impart of exceptional regional characters and development of excellent tannins in the grapes. Mulberry Tree is the quintessential Langhorne Creek Cabernet Sauvignon, named after an ancient mulberry tree growing right in the middle of an old vineyard, established in the 1920s. Fruit is treated to the traditional regimen of open vat and barrel ferments, followed by an old fashioned press into a selection of seasoned and new, French and American oak hogsheads for malolactic and a year's maturation. A deliciously dark berry wine, the palate is plump and fleshy, rich and round, redolent with hints of eucalypt and mint, its exceptional length is supported by chewy, toothsome tannins.

Frank Potts planted Verdelho cuttings, sourced off the isle of Madeira, into the rich alluvial flood plains of Langhorne Creek during the 1860s. Today, Bleasdale's Verdelho is fast emerging as one of Langhorne Creek's most stylishly savoury and pleasant drink now whites. Some of the grapes are hand picked from vines over eighty yeas of age. An estery, lifted fruit style of Verdelho wine, unwooded and dry, crisp and refreshing with zippy acidity and ripe fruit salad flavours, seasoned by a touch of lithe perfumed grassyness.

The grumpy and shy bearing old vines which yield some of the nation's finest Verdelho deserve respect. In the cool of the night you'll find Michael and Robbie Potts with their merry band of growers, carefully harvesting the wonderful old vines fruit. The early ripening Verdelho is treated to low temperatures throughout the vinification process, producing a crisp white wine which exudes lifted fruit salad aromas over lively tropical citrus flavours. Fermented to dryness and bottled whilst young to capture the freshness and vital herbaceous characters, so important to the finished wine.
 
Light green straw hue. Fresh lifted aromas of lemon zest with floral notes and hints of fresh herb. Zippy bouquets packed with loads of fragrant orange blossom, melon and kiwi fruits. The palate follows through with ripe lemon and lime citrus flavours, complexed by stonefruits, a fresh zippy acidity and extra length. The rich and lively fruit on the palate, working in fine tandem with a wildly refreshing acid, make Potts Catch a natural food wine in it's youth.

Bleasdale Powder Monkey Shiraz

Powder monkeys were rookies during the great age of sail, their job in times of ship to ship combat was to fill the ancient open muzzle cannons with gun powder and shot. A perilous internship aboard the decks on a man of war, in reference to Frank Potts term of seamanship in the Royal Navy. Potts established vines along the banks of Bremer River in the 1850s, he named his first block Powder Monkey, it remains the source of Langhorne Creek's most eminent Shiraz, a stately wine of splendid concentration and remarkable seamlessness.

The ancient wineworks house a massive red gum lever press, which fifth generation Michael Potts employs every year to make a small batch, limited release wine. Behind the Bleasdale cellars is a single block of vine which is called upon at vintage, to release precious parcels of hand picked Shiraz. Grapes are destemmed into open fermenters, pumped over four times daily throughout vinification, drained and pressed for an extended maceration on skins, before racking to a high proportion of new French oak puncheons and hogsheads for a year's maturation.
 
Deep crimson colour. An intense fruit nose, the accent is on dense blackberry, licorice and bitter chocolate notes. Tapenade and black olive flavours, ripe plum and milled tricolour pepper characters, supported by a veneer of splendid French oak and fine, savoury tannins running through the length of palate. A match to the finest gourmandise, suckling pig and pink lamb.
