John Duval Annexus Grenache

John Duval grew up amongst some splendid old vineyards and has an encyclopeadic knowledge of the finest Barossa sites. Grenache from a 150 year old Eden Valley ancestor parcel, assembled alongside a harvest from an ancient block in northern Barossa. A combination of whole bunches and stemmed grapes are treated to a traditional vinification in small open top fermenters, followed by transfer to seasoned French oak hogsheads for a year's maturation. Approachable in its youth, but with the sound structure and profound depth of palate to evolve magnificently.

John Duval is one of the great winemakers of the modern era, three times anointed Winemaker of Year at the prestigious London International. Annexus is crafted from a small parcel of very old vines Mataro, picked off a dry grown centenarian vineyard in the Light Pass precincts of Barossa Valley. A mix of stemmed grapes and whole bunches are vinified in a small open top, wooden vat fermenter, followed by a year's maturation in a selection of seasoned French oak hogsheads. An excruciatingly limited release, a mere 250 cases were made.

Eligo is crafted to be a transcendent expression of Shiraz. A wine of restrained power, rich in texture and palate length, Eligo represents the best of vintage, sourced from excellent old vineyards in the Barossa and Eden Valleys.

Since leaving Penfolds, Duval has consulted to a number of wineries in Australia, Europe and the Americas. He is a partner in the eminent Washington Long Shadows label and continues to apply four decades of winemaking skill to some of the best fruit in the world. Eligo is sourced from hand picked Shiraz vineyards in the Barossa and Eden Valleys, it represents the best of vintage. Parcels are inoculated in small fermenters, the caps are closely managed and kept submerged. Some batches are kept up to a fortnight on skins, others complete their ferments in completely new oak. The completed Eligo is matured twenty months in a selection of mostly new, fine grain 300 litres French oak hogsheads.

Sourced from old vineyards in Krondorf, Light Pass and Ebenezer, a component of Eden Valley Shiraz has been included to maintain the elegance and purity of style. John Duval's objective with Entity is to construct a wine that's completely true to the grand old vineyards of the Barossa. Subtle French oak was chosen to compliment the ripe dark fruits. Traditional, low intervention winemaking techniques are employed, allowing the wine to be approachable in its youth, but with ample structure and depth of fruit to insure profound potential for development.

John Duval was appointed Chief Winemaker at Penfolds in 1986, overseeing one of the most dynamic periods of change in the Australian wine industry. Duval was born a winemaker, his family had operated a world famous sheep stud farm and quality vineyards south of Adelaide for many years, coincidentally supplying Shiraz grapes and vine cuttings to Penfolds, some formed the backbone of the mighty Grange Hermitage. Entity Shiraz is vinified under submerged cap in traditional open fermenters. Some batches complete their course in new oak. The finished wine is treated to fifteen months in a high selection of new 300 litres fine grain French oak hogsheads.
 
Deep ruby purple. Lifted expressive blackberry, plum and blueberry fruit with hints of cedar and cloves. Youthful structure with good texture and mouthful. An excellent concentration of pure Barossa fruit, black, lengthy and rich, balanced by attractive ripe tannins and bright acidity, all supported by high quality savoury French oak which adds structure and polish.

Shiraz is sourced from old vineyards in the Krondorf, Marananga and Ebenezer districts, Grenache from Tanunda and Krondorf, parcels of Mourvedre are picked off old bush vines grown to scattered blocks at Krondorf and Light Pass, the oldest over a hundred years of age. Parcels are treated to a course of vinification under submerged cap in traditional old open and small steel fermenters. Components are matured fourteen months in a selection of prior use 300 litres French oak hogsheads, mostly three to six year old barrels, intended to retain the suppleness of Grenache & Mourvedre, some of the Shiraz completes a luxurious barrel fermentation in completely new French oak.
 
Deep crimson purple red. Fragrant, with some spice. Complex aromatics, combining red and dark fruits with savoury notes. A flavoursome, generous palate mix of red and black fruits, compotes with a variety of spice, framed by youthful fine tannins and subtle savoury French oak which adds to the structure and complexity, the finish is layered and long.

Behind every great winemaker is a great winemaker's wife. Robert recounts how he finally gave in to Mrs Duval's pleas and created his first white wine. An artisan may spend decades refining his skills but a woman's intuition rules. Duval's Rhone styled cepage of Marsanne, Rousanne and Viognier has been a runaway success. Duval's aim with Plexus MRV is to promote a vibrant expression of fruit aromas from the interaction of the three varieties, to build structure and texture on the palate, rather than the blend's familiar acid crispness.

Two thirds of Plexus MRV is Marsanne grown to splendid vineyards in Marananga and Seppeltfield. A quarter of Roussanne is sourced from Kalimna and the balance of Viognier from Eden Valley. Gentle pressings of the fruit are combined with free run juices and cold settled. Vinification is initiated in fermenters, portions of Marsanne and Viognier complete their course in barrel where they remain until August. The remaining batches of Marsanne and Roussanne are aged on lees to enhance structure and infuse textures into the completed wine. A total of half the components are matured in a selection of mostly seasoned, fine grain French oak barrels for six months.
 
Attractive pale straw with lime hues. Fresh lifted aromas of stone fruit, honey suckle and citrus. Medium bodied with superb texture and mouthfeel. Flavours of mandarin and pear, fennel and Asian spice. Finishes on a note of citrus with minimal acidity. Drinking beautifully on release with the certainty of waxing wonderful complexity, toasted honey varietal characters as it continues to evolve.

First vintaged in 1974 alongside the inaugural Jimmy Watson winning edition of Wolf Blass Black Label, John's Blend was an instant success when it was ultimately released in 1977. The youthful John Glaetzer had already spent time working with Wolf Blass and alongside some of Australia's greats. John's Blend evolved as Glaetzer's own role became inceasingly prominent with Wolf Blass. The techniques that Glaetzer has employed for over forty years are simple, select nothing but the best grapes and complete the fermentation in the finest new oak.

Juniper Crossing Cabernet Merlot

The salubrious vines at Wilyabrup can rely on plenty of sunshine for well balanced canopies, a thorough ripening and full tannin development with every vintage. A mostly Cabernet Sauvignon wine, a substantial component of Merlot with inclusions of Malbec and Cabernet Franc, fashioned to a brightly lit, fruit driven style with sound structure and moderate oak influence. Merlot provides a fleshy mid palate while the Cabernet delivers depth, integrity and length. A bliss alongside succulent, melt in the mouth braises and oven roast root vegetables.

The Wilyabrup region's Forest Grove duplex over clay soils are ideal for producing the statuesque style of Cabernet Merlot wine. These soils contain a significant gravel component which aids drainage and reflects heat back onto the vines in the evening. The sandy loam component retains water, while the high gravel content tends to promote low vigor. Regimens of leaf plucking and trimming are employed throughout the growing season to achieve good fruit exposure. Harvests of Merlot and Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc are plunged and pumped over the course of two or three weeks fermentation, followed by fourteen months in a combination of seasoned and new French oak barrels.
 
Vibrant crimson red in colour. Rich ripe fruit characteristics of red cherry, blueberry, blackcurrant and plum along with hints of spice, liquorice, black olive and cedary vanillin oak. The palate is smooth and plush with a good depth of fleshy fruit characters and modest oak influence. The long fine tannins are balanced and highly supportive of the ripe fruit flavours, achieving a wine of sound structure and great length.

Juniper of Wilyabrup are one of the oldest vineyards at the heart of Margaret River. The propitious site was surveyed and defined after a subdivision by one of the nation's most prolific artist families, Ben, Andrew and Robert Juniper. They now produce some of the region's most stately Shiraz wines, Crossing are an entry level, fashioned to a fully approachable easy drinking style, whilst displaying all the sophistication of the estate's opulent icon efforts. The Crossings sound structure and solid weight of fruit make the ideal accompaniement to rich, braised meat recipes.

Juniper Estate Vineyard was planted by Henry and Maureen Wright in 1973 on Harmans Road South, in a picturesque setting along Wilyabrup Creek. The vines are grown to Margaret River's famous gravelly loam soils, which have produced so many Australian flagship wines. During the 19th century the road from Busselton to the south ran through what is now the vineyard and forded the Wilyabrup Creek, hence the Crossing. Parcels of dry grown Shiraz are vinified in open fermenters for three to four weeks, while being treated to a course of plunges and pumpovers. Batches are filled to a selection of seasoned and new French oak barrels for malolactic and fourteen months maturation.
 
Dense dark purple/ red colour. Bouquets of blackberry, ripe raspberries, dark cherry and plum, a floral lift of violets with a lick of mocha vanillin oak and hints of pepper, liquorice and dark chocolate. The palate exhibits velvety texture, full of black fruit characters and lively spice, cherries and plum, blackcurrants and blackberry along with hints of violet, white pepper and anise, finishing with fine tannins and lingering flavours.

Juniper Estate was established 1973 within a picturesque setting near Wilyabrup Creek along Harmans Road. The fully mature vines are grown to auspiciously gravel loam soils which have been essential to the production of Margaret River's stellar Cabernet wines. The propitious terroir and balmy maritime climes are heaven sent for the signet Bordeaux varietals. Juniper's viticultural team assemble parcels of Cabernet and Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, to fashion an elegantly aromatic and soundly structured wine, in engaging, new world Medoc styling.

An exclusive, dry grown, single vineyard wine from a mix of grapes which articulate the uniqueness of a resplendent site. The rich cepage of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, is hand picked in small batches off vines trellised to vertical shoot positioning. Fruit is de-stemmed and chilled into open fermenters for a natural and inoculated vinification, cold soaked for several days and treated to a regimen of plunging and pumpovers once or twice daily for optimal extraction of colour and tannins. The ferments spend up to thirty days on skins before transfer to a combination of new and seasoned French oak barrels for completion of malolactic and eighteen months maturation.
 
Dense red in colour. Concentrated and powerful nose with an abundance of dark fruit, cherries and plum, blueberries and cassis backed by complimenting cedary spiced vanillin oak. The palate is seamless and silky smooth, a Cabernet of controlled concentration, rich ripe fruit characters over a length of fine grain tannins, before a long, long finely textured finish.
