Grant Burge Miamba Shiraz
Barossa

A deliberate replanting and sustainable land management has returned the block to its former glory. The fruit here shows exceptional varietal character, great concentration and intense flavours. The oak treatment has evolved over the years, fermentation and ageing are completed in a greater proportion of quality oak, contributing to Miamba's refined style and impressive structure. The growing seasons at Miamba vineyard, at the southern end of Barossa Valley near Lyndoch, are superior by any measure. Shiraz is harvested, crushed and de-stemmed into a mix of four, seven and eleven tonne fermenters, pumped over thrice daily for optimal extraction of tannins and flavour while controling the temperature of vinification. Batches are pressed directly into a selection of seasoned and new European oak hogsheads for the completion of ferments and secondary malolactic. Components remain in oak for several months until assemblage, the final wine is transferred back into barrel for a further seventeen months maturation before bottling.

Inky black colour, vivid purple hue. A wine of amazing intensity and depth, aromas of dark chocolate coated licorice, blueberry and dark fruits, mocha and savoury spice enhanced by cedar aromas and hints of mint. The palate is equally generous, exhibiting concentrated flavours of spiced plums, blackberries, musk and cracked pepper, melded together with a acidity and grainy tannins before a lengthy finish.

The Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes are carefully hand picked to minimise maceration of grape bunches during transport. The crates are placed in refrigerated rooms at 4C to minimise the amount of colour extracted from the red skinned Pinot Noir grapes during pressing. The whole bunches are then loaded directly into the bag press and gently squeezed to produce a clear, fine juice fraction. The juice is then clarified and inoculated with native Champagne yeasts to ferment at cool temperatures. The percentage of Pinot Noir in the blend has gradually been increased to 80% to give greater depth of flavour and increased aromatics. The assemblage spends twenty seven months on tirage before disgorgement and liqueuring.

Wonderfully effervescent, copper hues. Exhibits yeast and biscuit aromas, hazelnut and brioche, combined with ripe strawberry and rose petal notes. A rich and generous palate shows flavours of bread dough, strawberry and oyster, with a lean acid backbone from its cool climate fruit origins and a lingering creamy mouth feel due to extended time on lees. In 1997 the first acres on Marschall Groom's Kalimna Bush Block were planted to Shiraz, producing a crop for the 1999 vintage. Classic, ultra premium Shiraz territory! The unforgiving soils are well known for very low yields, loose clusters and extremely small berries. To compliment the youth of estate vines, a component is sourced from the distinguished Fechner Vineyard, home to fifty years old vines. The parcels of Shiraz are treated to a traditional and gentle vinification, minimally handled to small batch vinification techniques. Juices are punched down over skins in open top vessels for several days, followed by an extended maturation in a selection of new and seasoned American and French oak barrels.

Deep, black and brooding in colour. The nose shows bright fresh aromas of blackberry, licorice and spice, true to its variety. The new oak component is kept at a minimum allowing the vibrant fruit characters to elevate. A palate that will appeal to all, particularly the warmth, length and velvety silkiness it delivers. This is an awesome, delicious Shiraz, a very focused, classy and beautifully structured wine.
