A tale of two winegrowing regions, fruit is harvested from choice vineyards in McLaren Vale, crushed and chilled to tanker, transferred to the Pokolbin wineworks in Hunter Valley. Parcels are treated to a vinomatic fermentation, without any excessive plunges or movement of juices, to extract only the finest supple tannins. Upon completion, components are filled to a selection of seasoned and new, French and American oak barriques for term of maturation.


Dense red, youthful purple hues. Red fruit bouquets, bramble and cassis, varietal Merlot plummy notes and Cabernet leaf over hints of cedar. Brokenwood Cricket Pitch Red

The first block of Brokenwood vines ever planted were on a cricket pitch. Acquisition of this ten acre property along McDonalds Rd in October of 1970 almost fell into competitor's hands during a bidding war against Hungerford Hill. By the time the site became productive in 1973, Brokenwood had established themselves at the apex of a resurgence in Hunter Valley viticulture. Cricket Pitch is a varietally rich mix of Cabernet and Shiraz, Merlot and Petit Verdot, from vineyards in the central ranges of New South Wales, Beechworth and McLaren Vale.

Fashioned to a fruit driven, drink now styling, Cricket Pitch is an entry level into one of the nation's most collectable labels. A precious block separating Cricket Pitch and the eminent Graveyard Vineyard has remained elusive to Brokenwood, who were taunted for many years with outrageous invoices sent to them by neighbouring Hungerford Hill over the collection of firewood. The warring estates have now called a truce in the interest of fine wine. Cabernet and Shiraz, Merlot and Petit Verdot are crushed into vinomatic fermenters and treated to a three day cold soak prior to vinification. Upon completion, Cricket Pitch is matured eighteen months in a selection of seasoned American and French oak barriques.

Medium to dark garnet. Aromas of red cherry and milled spice, vanillin and earth notes. Mid weight palate with some Cabernet cedar up front that leads to soft Shiraz richness. The oak regime is mainly older American and French so limited impact although some vanillin on both nose and palate with a long sweet finish. A drink now style that will continue to soften, excellent fruit flavours and balance being the features.

Brokenwood are renowned for Semillon, they retain vineyards from which to collate the finest parcels, a component is selected to be vinified alongside choice harvests of Sauvignon Blanc. Cricket pitch is a reference to the first block of vines Brokenwood ever planted, a community block which was acquired after a hotly contested auction against neighbouring Hungerford Hill. An assemblage of fruit, hand picked off sites in Cowra, Orange uplands and Hunter Valley, are fashioned into a revitalizing wine of seamless integration and engaging complexity.

Brokenwood are one of the nation's great wineries, they conduct a search every year to identify harvests of fruit which can be compliment the enduring Hunter Valley style of classic dry white. Parcels of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon from outside the Hunter Valley are processed to the primary juice stage before transport to the Brokenwood wineworks for fermentation and assemblage. This prelude to vinification ensures that the delicate grape and fruit aromas are preserved. Components are treated to a brisk temperature controlled ferment to capture the clean varietal expression of fruit and retain freshness. A small portion is oak barrel fermented to add texture and complexity.


Bright pale yellow with green hues. Bouquets of lime citrus, lifted lemongrass and tropical fruit, herbaceousness and savoury hay notes. Exceptional Langtons Classification. Graveyard is the jewel of the Brokenwood crown, it endures as one of the nation's great first growths. A word to the squeamish, the property may have been zoned as Pokolbin cemetery in 1882 but was never populated. Established to descendants of colonial rootstock in 1968, the vines at Graveyard struggle to yield meagre harvests of the most intense berries. A Shiraz of outstanding line, as Len Evans coined the phrase, to convey fine structure, exquisite balance and generous palate length.

A terroir of extremely heavy clays over loam subsoils, pockets of ironstone here and there, topsoils are very mean and shallow. Yields from the Graveyard Vineyard are low, but fruit flavour is intense through the fastidious employment of meticulous viticultural techniques. Grapes are all hand picked and treated to an extended cold soak, followed by several days of vinification in a collection of three tonnes, open top fermenters at 26C to 28C, hand plunged twice daily. Upon completion to dry, batches are pressed off skins and filled to a high proportion of new French oak barrels and larger format 500 Litres puncheons, for a course of malolactic and term of maturation.


Bright red colour, youthful hues. A nose in the savoury red spectrum, almost cherry compote, bran meal and vanillan oak with sufficient fruit to balance. These follow on to the medium bodied palate with plenty of sweet flavours up front, initially soft to mid weight tannins, followed by red berry and spice flavours. Fine grape and oak tannins begin to grip on the excellent, lasting finish.

There's never much Hunter Valley Shiraz around but it always represents an engaging experience in elegance and style, especially if it's made from grapes picked off the unnervingly named Graveyard Vineyard. The oldest vines on the Graveyard property are amongst the first growth of Australian Shiraz, younger blocks are called upon for the construct of a regional Hunter Valley edition, exhibiting superior structure and penetrating fruit, refined elocution and exquisite grace.

The fifteen hectare Graveyard Vineyard is planted to a gentle, east facing slope, generally cooler in clime, principally of red and white clays, iron stones and loam. Shiraz is sourced off blocks of vine cloned off original rootstock dating back to the 1960s. Fruit is treated to a combination of vinomatic and part open top, two to four tonne fermenters. Batches are treated to pumpovers once or twice daily over the course of a week, pressed off skins and sent for a course of malolactic. Components are filled to a selection of seasoned and new, French oak barrels and puncheons for a term of maturation.


Vibrant deep red colour. Lifted fresh red fruit and spice notes, anise and the fragrant redolence of countryside. Lovely savoury, red cherry flavours, ripe red and black currants over a background of oak, supported by a length of fine grained tannins. A fine accompaniement to all good gourmandise, red wine braises and recipes calling on rhubarb.

What makes a great vintage for Hunter Valley Semillon? Most would say one without flooding rain, ravaging fires or devastating drought. Brokenwood's first vintage was a labour of love for the partners, friends and families conscripted to help. Grapes were carried to the winery in the back seat of Len Evans Bentley. Since then, the estate has learned to live with drought and adversity, and to nourish it's precious vines on a wing and a prayer. In 1982, Brokenwood extended its operations to include the jewel of the Hunter Valley and planted it's vineyards to Semillon. Harvesting is all done by hand, grapes are crushed, chilled and immediately pressed. Neutral yeasts are applied and the juices are inoculated for vinification in fermenters, unwooded and unoaked without any malolactic.

Yellow green hues. Lifted almond bread and florals, bees wax and toast, Bickford lime. Distinctive Hunter lemongrass/ straw, sweet apple blossom flavours, sweet fruits initially on the palate, perfect ripeness and excellent acid structure, great length of kafir lime and apple blossom. An evolving, endless finish on a length of pitted stonefruit kernels, preserved peel, calico and old lace. Truly the benchmark in new world, old vineyard Semillon.

It was the compelling efforts of the artisanal Giaconda which placed Beechworth on the map for world class Chardonnay. Indigo Vineyard is a close neighbour, younger in age and slightly different in terms of aspect and clime, it yields a quality of Chardonnay which lends itself to a more modern style of winemaking. A measure of old world practices are nevertheless employed, wild ferments in new French oak and a judicious term of age, the objective is to encourage fruit to unlock its potential, while retaining natural eloquence and sense of place.

It was not until a decade of red wine vintages had passed before the Brokenwood team turned their hands to varietal whites. Now representing a major part of Brokenwood's production every year, good sites further afield have been husbanded for the construct of the bigger boned, more solidly structured styles of white wine not easily realized from within Hunter Valley. Different soils and aspect, clones and age of vines at Indigo, paint a picture of a region which demands to express itself. Parcels of Indigo Vineyard Chardonnay are whole bunch pressed into a high proportion of new French oak barrels from choice cooperages, for a wild, indigenous yeast vinification and term of maturation.


Vibrant yellow green hues. Pear and citrus notes over a background of mealy oak, wild ferment edges of struck flint. Tannin and French oak sweetness on the finely textured palate, bright citrus flavours and luscious tropical acidity, a little fuller with flavour towards the back and middle, finishing clean and lingering on a length of grapefruit nougat notes.

An Ã©levage of Pinot Noir clones 114, 115 and MV6. The quality of harvest at Indigo is always superior, even in average vintage years, the site was established from the ground up in the right way, making the job of preserving regional and varietal expression of the greatest import. Grapes are harvested and treated to several days of cold soak, a portion is included as whole bunches for complexity. Upon completion of ferments, batches are racked to a selection of predominantly seasoned French oak barriques for a year's maturation.

Medium red, purple hues. Fragrant Pinot Noir nose of cherries, red plums and rhubarb, sassafras and forest floor over a background of sweet oak. Soft entry to the palate on a length of compote berries and dried fruit richness, supported by a veneer of oak and ripe grape tannins. Already complex and ripe after a term of oak and bottle age, a suitable match to seared salmon, pancetta shards and morrell.

Established in 1970, Brokenwood Wines has evolved from a weekend venture for self-professed hobby winemakers into one of Australia's most reputable wine labels

Brokenwood was founded by a trio of Sydney-based solicitors, Tony Albert, John Beeston and James Halliday, who paid a then record price of $970 per acre for a 10-acre block in the foothills of the Brokenback Ranges. The original block - originally planned as a cricket ground for the local community was planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.

The first vintage was picked in 1973. It was a labour of love for the partners, and the friends and families they conscripted to help, with the grapes being carried to the winery in buckets in the back seat of Len Evans' Bentley. Brokenwood's inaugural vintage yielded 75 dozen Shiraz - Cabernet. While none of the original partners claimed to know anything about viticulture, the wine received praise, and attracted a loyal following from its first vintage.


In 1975, a new winery was built to accommodate the growing production. The winery housed fermentation tanks and oak barrels, and, in dorm-style accommodation, the exhausted bodies of the many helpers who came to stay at Brokenwood, seduced by the promise of clean country air, fine food, wine and company in exchange for help on the vineyard. Visitors helped themselves to a taste of the very limited and eagerly sought after boutique wine made by Halliday and his band of weekend winemakers from a table standing in the shade of the first floor balcony. Many of Australia's most prominent wine identities did their time in the vineyards at Brokenwood during the Seventies Growth was steady until the boom of 1978, when six new partners joined, allowing the purchase of the next door Graveyard Vineyard. Designated as a cemetery by the local town planners, but never used as such, the block had been planted with Shiraz & Cabernet Sauvignon. The heavy clay soil resulted in vintages of low yield, but with extraordinary concentration of flavour in the berries, providing a distinctive wine style that is still evident in the Brokenwood red wines.	The Graveyard Vineyard created Brokenwood's flagship wine, the Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz, which is still sourced exclusively from this one vineyard. The Langtons Classification of Distinguished Australian Wine has it as the highest rated Hunter Valley red wine, in the Outstanding category. In the same year, Brokenwood sourced fruit from outside the Hunter Valley for the first time - Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra - which was blended with Hunter fruit to make a premium red.
In 1982, the company extended its range to include white wines - notably the jewel of the Hunter Valley, Semillon. With this broadened scope, the partners decided to consolidate further growth by appointing a Chief Winemaker/Managing Director. Iain Riggs joined Brokenwood in 1982, introducing new winery equipment and facilities specifically for premium white wine production. Brokenwood was now capable of producing high quality white wine, which, since 1983, has been a significant part of its total production. The multi-regional blend wines, such as the popular Cricket Pitch range, are sourced from premium regions throughout Australia to create a style that demonstrates balance, elegance and consistency. While the size of the company has grown, the operation remains deliberately labour intensive, being the only way of assuring the individuality of the wines.
