Peter Lehmann Classic Sauvignon Blanc 2013

Peter Lehmann's story with Noble Semilon goes back many years, when Andrew Wigan had the good fortune of experiencing vintage within the vineyards at Chateau d'Yquem, home to the greatest sweet white wine in the world. What he had assumed to be spoilage, was in fact Botrytis Cinerea. Traditionally, Botrytis affected wines are the most complex and longest lived of all. The Barossa Valley is an ideal region for late harvest, given the quality of local Semillon and the warm conditions that continue well into vintage.

Walking through the vineyards of Chateau d'Yquem, Andrew Wigan could see fruit in the same condition as what he'd experienced back home. Armed with the confidence that Botrytis Cinerea in the Barossa was identical to Sauternes, Wigan returned fully determined to create Peter Lehmann's own expression of Botrytis Semillon. Made exclusively from grapes picked at the Peter Lehmann Semillon vineyard, along the banks of the River Para, when infection of the Semillon is perfect. The grapes are crushed and left on skins overnight before being pressed the next day. Juices are clarified and treated to a mix of fermenters or French oak hogsheads for six months before bottling.

Brightly polished gold hues. Classical aromas of lime marmalade, dried pear and a hint of apricot kernel. Stylish, more-ish and luscious, delicious with dried currant and apricot flavours, complemented by fully integrated French oak, pierced by superb natural acids. A wine of remarkable intensity and superb weight, multi dimensional fruit, everywhere on the middle palate, beckoning for another sip.

The Barossa stands amongst the great wine regions of the world, it's finest editions of Shiraz can express a magical diversity in flavour, style and texture. Parcels of fruit collated from mature, low yielding sites in the Stonewell, Light Pass and Vine Vale districts, are vinified and macerated on skins for up to a fortnight, along with some partial barrel ferments. The diversity of terroir is reflected in the finished wine, soils, elevation and vine age vary from one site to the next. After pressing and clarification, Eight Songs is matured in completely new French oak hogsheads for eighteen months, followed by a further period of bottle ageing under the Peter Lehmann cellars before release. The palate shows dark plums, choc/ mocha notes with hints of vanillin undertones. The elevated northern districts of Barossa Valley make a perfumed and delicate style of Cabernet Sauvignon. Vines planted to drier, cooler climes than the Barossa valley floor, offer much lower yields, translating into rich and powerful Cabernet wines of great intensity and structure. Peter Lehmann retain access to some of the oldest and very best Cabernet sites in the region. The choicest parcels are selected on the basis of juicy berry fruit flavours and fragrant minty violet characters. Fruit is crushed into fermenters for a term of cold soak followed by a week of vinification. Upon completion, batches are pressed, clarified and filled to a selection of French and American oak hogsheads for a year's maturation.

Deeply coloured garnet red. Initial black cherry notes precede a redolent bouquet of currants and mint, violets and cassis. A richly endowed, solidly structured palate, offering great length of flavour, blackberries and cocoa, inky fruits and Barossa chocolate fruit characters, before a soft, fined grained tannin finish. Drinking beautifully, a superb accompaniment to beef, wild game or ripe, pungent cheese.

A splendid high altitude effort, expressing fully the uniqueness of Chardonnay grown to the lofty terroirs of Eden Valley. Grapes are sourced from choice independent grower vineyards, tucked way up high in the eastern Barossa ranges. The region is particularly cool, perched atop steep slopes and on lean rocky soils, planted to clones of Chardonnay which can thrive in the challenging mesoclimes. Yields here are normally low, producing outstanding white wines with a measure of delicacy and purity of fruit.

An early harvest Chardonnay style, fashioned to a combination of old and new world winemaking techniques, followed by a term of cool barrel maturation, achieving a delicate wine with remarkable balance of fruit, preserving the divinely pristine persona of the vineyard. Determining the optimal date for picking is essential to constructing a wine of balance and finesse. Following harvest and the crush, batches are drained directly into French oak hogsheads set in a cool environment allowing natural yeasts present on the grapes to initiate ferment. Upon completion, the wines are treated to partial malolactic, barrels are topped up and stirred regularly for eight months prior to stabilisation and bottling.

Fine green/ gold tinge to the colour. Lovely nose of cut stonefruits and lemon preserve, hawthorn and ripe nashi. A lovely balance of fruit complexity on the palate has been derived from rich barrel ferments and battonage. H&V will acquire a deeper gold colour and become richer in flavour as it evolves. Today it represents a very ready to appreciate Chardonnay alongside chicken roast and rabbit terrines.

Pinot Gris has found the perfect idyll within the cool climes and elevated aspects of Valley Eden. The long slow ripening produces an exceptionally well balanced style of Pinot Gris with heightened acidity and brisk natural fruit characters. An aromatic, textural white wine that's so highly engaging, while serving as a contemporary Australian take on the established French style. H&V's mouthfilling and complex, layered palate makes it a cinch with food and a fine match to all cosmopolitan faire.

Parcels of Pinot Gris grown to a splendid site, high up the Eden Valley, atop bony, rocky soils, are picked a little later in the season to make a more textural style of wine. Following harvest, grapes are crushed and the juices drained immediately away to ensure a finished wine of delicacy and softness. A small portion is inoculated in French oak hogsheads to create a Pinot Gris of characteristic barrel ferment richness, the balance is treated to vinification in chilled fermenters to retain the urgency of Eden Valley fruit. After a few weeks on sedimentery yeast lees, components are assembled, stabilized and bottled early to preserve freshness. Alcohol 13.0%


Delicate colour with a green tinge. Bouquet of freshly cut pear, blossoms and pine nut, nashi and quince. The palate is rich and soft, offering lemon zest stonefruit flavours, hazelnut and vegetable, textural with a mineral crunch, before a pleasingly dry finish. Drinking beautifully now, serve lightly chilled alongside pan fried salmon or prawns, roast pork or chicken mushroom pie.

Eden Valley Rieslings are highly acclaimed, the finished wines revealing great definition of terroir, elegance and style. H&V is sourced exclusively from Stanton and Petney's property atop the High Eden Valley on the eastern Barossa ranges. This steep east facing site is particularly cool as it lies over 420m above sea level on shallow rocky soils, ideal for enhancing the natural acid balance of ultra fine Riesling. Grapes are picked early, crushed and chilled, juices are immediately separated from skins to enhance delicacy. Following a slow cool vinification in fermenters, the wine is clarified and treated to a prompt bottling for the retention of the elegant Eden Valley character.

Grapes are sourced predominantly from three choice vineyards at Koonunga, Tanunda and Lyndoch, as well as contributions from other fine sites, dotted throughout the premier viticultural precincts of Barossa Valley. The Lehmann team take aim at constructing a full flavoured, seamless wine that's consistent with the enduring Barossa style of Shiraz, robustly flavoured yet gentle on the palate, generous yet finely balanced. Parcels of fruit are crushed into fermenters and treated to a term of cold soak for optimal extraction, the musts are vinified on skins over the course of a fortnight, followed by transfer to a selection of fine French oak hogsheads for a year's maturation.

Crimson with dark garnet hues. An articulate nose of lively black cherries, brambles and chocolatey French oak, garnished by twists of the pepper mill. A deeply layered palate, showing flavours of currants and plum, liquorice and mellow, dark chocolate oak. All operations are carried out on a single site located near Tanunda, in the heart of the internationally famous Barossa Valley, South Australia. Peter Lehmann Wines has earned many medals and trophies along with great accolades from wine judges in Australia and throughout the world. Now a public company of international repute, Peter Lehmann Wines is regarded as one of Australia's pre-eminent wine brands.

The care and consideration which Peter Lehmann Wines brings to the selection of grapes enable the winery to produce its wide range of distinctive, award-winning and internationally acclaimed wines. Peter Lehmann Wines are created from grapes purchased from about 185 carefully selected independent growers as well as grapes grown in the four company-owned vineyards. Many of the growers families have worked the same vineyards for five and, in some cases, six generations. These Barossa vignerons tend to around 900 individual vineyards that run the gamut of the Barossa, through Lyndoch, Vine Vale, Light Pass, Greenock, Ebenezer and the Eden Valley.


It is significant that the majority of the vineyards from which Peter Lehmann source their fruit are classified as mature, ranging in ages from 20 to over 100 years old. Many are ungrafted and dry grown. The famous Barossa wine region is a little over an hour by car north of Adelaide, South Australia's capital. The Barossa comprises two regions, the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley. The wide range of soils and micro-climates produce a wealth of grape styles, providing the winemakers with the luxury of being able to select from the known vineyard flavour profile, the grapes which will create the style they are seeking The Barossa Valley is generally less than 400 metres above sea-level and stretches from Williamstown in the south to Kapunda and Truro in the north. The red-brown soils are more fertile than those of the Eden Valley but rainfall here can be up to 50% less. Temperatures are generally about 2C warmer. Eden Valley includes the country from Truro in the north through to Mount Pleasant in the south. It ranges between 400 metres and 600 metres above sea-level with most of the winegrowing country located in the higher, cooler, wetter sections of the region. Soils are rocky and acidic and winter rainfall is plentiful, averaging 255mm more per annum than the Barossa Valley. Temperatures are cooler therefore the growing season is longer.	There are about 550 growers in the Barossa, some of them sixth-generation Barossans. Together, they produce an average of 55,000 tonnes of grapes each vintage, harvested from over 8,000 hectares of vines. Internationally, the Barossa is unique in that it has never suffered an outbreak of phylloxera. This means that many vineyards still thrive on their own root stocks, distinguishing the Barosssa as a wine-growing region with some of the world's oldest vines.
While the Barossa's 60,000 tonnes represents only about 5% of the national crush, it is premium fruit The history of the Barossa and its disproportionate presence in the super-premium categories make it Australia's most influential and internationally recognised wine region. Excellence in winemaking is about exploration and adventure. Peter Lehmann Wines is currently working with varieties recently introduced to the Barossa, including Tempranillo and Zinfandel varieties. The four company-owned Peter Lehmann vineyards, which produce just 2% of requirements, are comprised of the Stonewell, Riverflat, Andriske and Trillians Hill vineyards. The Stonewell vineyard, of 18 hectares (45 acres), is situated in the Barossa and produces Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot and Grenache grapes. The 1 hectare (2.5 acres) Riverflat vineyard, located near the winery, grows Semillon and features a sprinkler system installed to promote the botrytis infection required for the production of Noble Semillon.
