The Galvanized Wine Group is a mob of Aussies with plenty of passion and good creds. The intrepid Ben Riggs makes the wines but all stakeholders, growers and staff get in on the act. To make a Black Chook, selection of site is central to the finished style of wine. The Tomich vineyard yields fruit with exceptional quality and balance. The unequivocally cool climate, very old, low to moderately fertile podsolic over schitz quartz soils yield outstanding Sauvignon Blanc. Parcels of grapes from Block J and Block L are destemmed straight into the press. A regimen of skin contact is employed to extract maximum flavours before inoculation and controlled, low temperature fermentation.

Light, bright straw colour. Freshly cut spring grass and sage on the nose, paired nicely with citrus and a touch of passionfruit sweetness to the mid palate. Call this a wine of many adjectives, fragrant and full of flavour, redolent of fresh herbs and cool climate fruit, stimulating, just perfect with food.

A collaboration between Ben Riggs and Tony Parkinson of Penny’s Hill, Black Chook is the bigger sibling from the Woop Woop wineworks. The backbone of Shiraz is sourced from good vineyards in McLaren Vale, sites that are nourished by a Mediterranean climate, winter dominant rainfall, warm, dry summers and low humidity. Further components from choice vineyards along the Limestone Coast infuse the palate with exciting blackcurrant and eucalypt characters. Vinified in a combination of fermenters, a period of maceration on skins intensifies the colour and extracts sleek tannins. Maturation in a selection of fine oak barrels serves to soften and integrate the palate, developing velvety mouthfeel.

Bright garnet colour. A plum and chocolate nose filled with hints of ripe berries and gentle spice. The palate is smooth and layered with rich flavours supported by supple vanilla oak and firm tannins, culminating in a long lingering finish of soft varietal plum and cherry characters, but not without the varietal punch of ground pepper and spice. A suitable accompaniement to flavourful braises and grilled meats.

McLaren Vale has an unrivalled reputation in Australia and indeed the world, for constantly producing first-class wines. It has one of the most consistent, Mediterranean-style climates in which to grow premium wine grapes. The cool climate of the Adelaide Hills on very old podzolic soils of low to moderate fertility makes for ideal growing conditions and an enviable reputation for magnificent white grapes.

Nearby Langhorne Creek is an old established region from which both Shiraz and Viognier have been drawn. Padthaway, first planted in 1964, is an iconic South Eastern Australian region known for rich soils, underground water supply and temperate climate.

As they scratched around for a name for the first Shiraz Viognier, an obviously interested black chook stopped in its unplanned tracks, lingering, as only chooks do, just long enough for the penny to drop. For its trouble, they immortalised that single Black Chook, rationalising that it had come from a small white egg, just as their dark, inky, black Shiraz had been transformed by a tiny amount of fragrant white Viognier. Utilising premium fruit from eminent wine regions in South Australia, The Black Chook brand struts affordable wines to be enjoyed and adored, shared and celebrated! Since first vintage in 2003, The Black Chook Shiraz has scored an uninterrupted run of 90+ points, internationally recognised reviews and enjoys great success everywhere.

Careful vineyard selection teamed with exceptional winemaking and an emphasis on consistent varietal expression hatches wines with approachability, generosity and character that really are something to cluck about.
